Affordable ways to make your bedroom feel like a hotel

One of the best parts to a holiday might be staying overnight in a posh hotel – a luxurious experience achieved through a layering of elements in comfort and care, many of which can be applied in your own home with a little imagination.

1. Clear the decks

Part of the appeal of a hotel room is the absence of the detritus of your daily life. Removing the clutter of items collected over time such as half-unpacked suitcases, piles of clothes, trinkets and unread books, will clear your mind and allow for rest and relaxation.

2. Cut down on the cushions

Don’t get us wrong, we love the power of throw cushions to add your own style and decorative flourish to your bedroom. Just don’t overdo it! Since you don’t actually employ staff to remove them from your bed each night, keep it streamlined and simple for the ultimate hotel experience.

3. Tuck in your sheets

Rather than a quick pull-up, put care and effort into folding hospital corners and tucked-in sheets every morning – as if you’re being watched! Even if you loosen them as you climb in at the end of the day, you’ll appreciate your early efforts and focus on your immediate surroundings to unwind.

4. Set up a mindful space

High-end hotel rooms are usually equipped with an armchair and table to invite reading and focused activity. Use your favourite statement chair as it was intended and create a spot to spend time in quiet reflection.

5. Go five star with window coverings

There’s nothing like adding black-out curtains to a room to give the feeling of both luxury and privacy. Heavy curtains to insulate from weather, noise and light is key to creating a hotel feel and an environment for the best sleep possible.

6. Install bedside light switches

In an unfamiliar hotel suite a switch handy to the bed is essential, however, the ability to control your task lighting from your bed is an affordable luxury for any home. Lamps, smart lights or wall sconces all allow for easy access from the bed itself.

7. Activate your own turn-down service

Short of putting a chocolate on your pillow, there’s a lot you can do to prepare your room for your retirement yourself. Turn down the sheets, dim the lights, fold away your clothes and fill your water glass. Relax.

8. Reinstate your alarm clock

We all know having your smart phone next to the bed is not ideal for the best quality sleep. With your entire life at your fingertips 24 hours a day, the need to switch off overnight is essential. A good old-fashioned alarm clock – even a clock radio – does one thing well and that’s wake you up to start the day on your own terms.

Now, if we could just find a way to get room service to deliver breakfast to your bedside, that would be a five-star hotel experience!
