If your wardrobe is bursting at the seams and you can’t find a thing to wear, the problem is no with your clothes, but the way you’re storing them.

Storing clothes may represent an emotional side of your personality that’s getting in the way of your efficiency, and possibly your personal style. If you can’t find what you’re looking for to wear each day easily, your progress through the morning will be unnecessarily hampered and may set you up for a haphazard day to follow.

Because the process of washing, drying, folding and storing clothes is a collection of daily tasks, the best approach is to have a system to work by. A place for everything and everything in its place.

Here are three things you need to do every day to fall in love with your clothes again and create a workable plan for keeping it that way.

1. Fold them carefully

We can learn a lot from the inimitable Marie Kondo, with her philosophies on the meaning of our belongings and how they bring us joy – or whether we should let them go.

Kondo encourages us to carefully fold our clothes away each day and after washing to make a connection with them and experience the value of each piece. If this sounds extreme, give it a try. You might just find yourself decluttering many items that don’t bring you joy and developing a new sense of joy in others.

2. Store off-season clothing

Cull your wardrobe each season to remove clothes that won’t be worn for some months. This will free up space on your shelves and racks, in drawers and cupboards, as well as headspace. Store away in blanket bags or suitcases in your attic or out-of-the-way storage area.

Organise the remaining clothing by type – or colour if that suits you better – so you can plan an outfit with what’s in front of you, wear and wash pieces and return them to be stored, without the clutter and annoyance of bulky or unseasonal clothes creating confusion.

3. Put everything away at the end of each day

Sounds simple but this is key to starting each new day with a clean slate and a clear mind. Leaving the detritus of each day lying around will accumulate, resulting in an unnecessary load both physically and mentally. Fold away or hang your clothes at the end of each day for maximum satisfaction.
