Vintage inspiration: A 90s cottage gets a well-deserved makeover

The new central living area is anchored by an over-dyed – and well-travelled – kilim rug; it was imported from Turkey. The leather Clement Meadmore ‘Sling’ chairs were bought at Leonard Joel Auctions. A 1946 Eames chair delivers a splash of red, while built-in cabinetry in black Laminex and plywood provides space to hide toys and display collected finds. The Jetmaster gas fireplace was chosen because it sits flush with the ground.

The C-shaped house was built and designed to make use of the natural northern light. The kitchen, which faces north, has a wonderful surprise; the sliding pantry door. It is accessed via a Centor sliding door, hung on an exposed track.

One side of the kitchen and living area is bordered by 20mm double-glazed, argon-filled windows from Binq, which allow winter sunlight to pour in, and simultaneously keep the cold out. For a similar design, contact Binq, binq.com.au.

The studio was originally a separate building in the backyard, but was connected to the home by the extension. A desk and pigeonhole shelves by Like Butter form a sleek work space.

In a nod to mid-century architect Mies van der Rohe, the bathroom looks out to its own courtyard. The Mark Tuckey sandblasted Oregon vanity satisfies the couple’s love of warm textures, while the Caroma ‘Liano’ basin, Reece shaving cabinet and Rogerseller ‘Gas’ taps are simply chic additions.

Grey floor tiles and white subway tiles, all from Beaumont Tiles, create a minimalist backdrop for statement pieces such as the Hay ‘Strap’ mirror, Citta Design towels from Shelley Panton, and the vintage-style bath from Cast Iron Baths.

The main bedroom is a bold mix of old and new. Adding to this new-classic scheme are a 1950s Grant Featherston chair and Jean Boris Lacroix lamp. A pink-trimmed throw and cushions from The Family Love Tree, together with a Rachel Castle artwork, add blush tones to the palette.
