Locals will be familiar with this distinctive fairytale cottage that was, once upon a time a fully operational windmill.
Residents of The Hamptons communities along the east coast of Long Island in upstate New York know that the area once played host to a thriving agricultural community before the industrial age and many chose windmills as a way to power their farms.
A handful of homes in the area were also built with windmills as part of the main structure and are now listed as historic buildings and much coveted. Those that remain have a mixture of uses, from tourist attractions to guesthouses and private homes, whilst others stand simply as historical landmarks.
Celebrities and the wealthier members of the New York social set enjoy holidays in The Hamptons – the beachside lifestyle of the rich and famous driving a high-end coastal style of architecture that has certainly informed many a residential building with its timber clad, white and bright decorating style.
Built in the 1800’s, Amagansett’s Legendary Wind Mill house in East Hampton once hosted Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller for a weekend when they were married during the 1950s. Now available for rent, the newly renovated cottage is a pretty reminder of yesteryear.
The home has two elegant bedrooms set beneath impressive exposed timber beams, one bathroom, a snug living room and fully equipped eat-in kitchen.
The crowning glory is perhaps the walk-in wardrobe in the apex of the windmill, over which the enormous shaft passes that once turned its sails.
Set on more than five acres of lush private woodland it’s easy to imagine Ms Monroe hiding away in movie star style and possible to emulate the beautiful actress yourself – for just USD$55,000 this summer.
