Drinking gin and tonic may help reduce hay fever

Woo-hoo!

If you’re one of the 2.7 million Australians who suffer from asthma, help may be at hand from an unlikely source – a glass of gin and tonic.

More than 64 per cent of asthma sufferers claim that alcohol can make their allergies worse and this is all down to two triggering chemicals: histamine and sulphites.

According to Asthma UK, clear spirits such as gin and vodka are a good option for asthma sufferers, as they have a relatively low histamine content.

Those looking to minimise the effects of hay fever should avoid drinks such as red wine and beer, which are known to contain both higher levels of histamine and sulphates.

Foods to avoid include smoked and cured meats and fish as well as cheeses such as camembert, parmesan, stilton and cheddar.

So next time you’re choosing a drink at the bar, opt for a good old G&T.
