Kitchen confidential: Tangerine dream

There’s so much more to this amazing kitchen than just its glowing colour (try Laminex in Pillarbox for similar). The double-island zone is the centrepiece of a spacious living and dining area at the heart of a home on the NSW south coast, and boasts masses of storage with a handy walk-in pantry and a plethora of cupboards and drawers on three sides of the twin island units.

Practical, easy-care concrete frames the island; it is the ideal material for an on-trend industrial feel. The low-aggregate finish on the floor has been buffed to a soft sheen, helping to reflect available light.

There’s a large, entertaining-friendly cooker, teamed with a striking De Dietrich rangehood, and extensive bench space: three and a half metres of it on each of the twin islands, perfect for entertaining. 

Set into the poured-concrete benchtop is a one-and-a-half bowl stainless-steel drop-in sink from Abey, paired with a swan-neck tap with a pull-out spray, great for washing vegies and tall pots; for similar, try the Blancoculina single-lever mixer from Harvey Norman. The cabinets and drawers have finger recesses, which also allows the sweep of colour to flow uninterrupted, and a soft-close function that means greatly reduced clatter in an open-plan space.

A mirrored upstand on the rear bench is a clever addition, screening the workzone from the living area, beyond.
