Flannelette vs flannel: which winter warmer wins?
There’s a common misconception that flannel and flannelette sheets are the same, but there are a few key differences between the two fabrics.
Flannelette is typically made from 100% cotton that has been brushed to create a soft, fuzzy texture, whereas traditional flannel can be made from wool or synthetic blends. While they feel similar, flannelette is generally lighter and more breathable, making it better suited for the Australian climate.
The only catch…
Yes, some flannelette sheets are prone to pilling, but there are a few ways that we can reduce (or prevent) our sheets from adopting that worn-out look. Choosing a high-weight cotton fabrication and washing your sheets on a gentle cycle is a great start, but homemakers should also aim to avoid high heat in the dryer, as excessive friction and temperature are the primary causes of fibre breakdown.
When shopping, look for flannelette sheets with a weight sitting somewhere between 170 and 190 GSM (Grams per Square Metre) for a high-quality set. If you are a hot sleeper, however, it may pay to look for something closer to 150 GSM to get the soft texture without the intense heat retention, or simply make the switch to a cotton sateen!
However, regardless of care, even high-quality flannelette sheets should be replaced every three to five years. You’ll know it’s time for a new set when the fabric becomes noticeably thin or loses its signature “loft” and softness.
