Former The Block stars Rachel and Ryan Carr have been busy in recent years renovating an Airbnb on the south coast of New South Wales. And while the stunning five-bedroom property has many headline-worthy features — a SMEG Victoria oven, motorised blinds, Dekton counter tops, to name a few — guests have been blowing up their inbox about one particular thing: the mattresses.
“I would probably say, without any kind of exaggeration, about 70 percent of our guest message us to ask, ‘what are the mattresses and what are the pillows?'” Rachel Carr recently revealed on The Edit podcast.
Fortunately, Rachel isn’t gatekeeping the secrets to her Airbnb success, confessing the mattresses are from the Osborn Luxury Collection by Sleeping Giant.
“Sleeping Giant created these mattresses for Osborn House, which is a boutique hotel in Bowral,” she shared. “They now sell them in the shops, but we were lucky enough to have them in our property as well — and they are phenomenal!’
Designed and made in Australia, these mattresses are famous for their layers of comfort and heat-regulating properties.
Meanwhile, the pillows at Rachel and Ryan’s luxury holiday rental are from Sheridan, with plush French linens from Eadie Lifestyle. Meanwhile, Rachel is stocking the bathrooms with the softest towels from Sheridan. (“The big, fluffy ones,” Rachel promises.)
“Those are the things you have to invest in, if you’re marketing yourself as a luxury holiday rental,” she confesses. “If you are marketing yourself as a weekender with all the kids, I don’t think you need to be spending the money on that.”
If you’re thinking of starting a holiday rental, Rachel’s other tip for aspiring Airbnb owners is to invest in washable couch covers and, if possible, bed heads with covers. “That is going to save you a lot of money,” she added, referring to the longevity provided by these items.
Rachel and Ryan, who appeared on The Block in 2022, completed their holiday home renovation in late 2023. The process was documented on the Channel 9 series Holiday Home Makeover.
The property, located near Berry, was dubbed Cinque House — ‘cinque’ meaning ‘five’ in Italian in reference to the home’s five bedrooms. All in all, the house sleeps up to 14 people, and has become a beloved holiday home for the Carrs as well as their guests.
Although Rachel and Ryan reside in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, the handy couple and their three kids love spending Christmas at Cinque House. “We try to make it as magical as possible,” they told Home Beautiful in 2025, while showing off their Christmas décor.
