A discount code, promo code or coupon code gives you a way to save on your online purchases with a particular store or brand. The code is usually a mix of numbers and letters that you can enter in the promo code field during the checkout process. Along with sales and other retail promotions, codes help you get what you want or need without paying full price. But a big difference is that a code can be more exclusive than a sale, because you need to know the code to use it.

Sales events and other promotions

Sales are the most popular way to save on purchases and most stores have several sales each year. Online, you’ll notice some retailers even have a permanent ‘sales’ section. But not every sale or offer is equal – we’ve found the biggest savings are often available during seasonal shopping events, including:

Black Friday: Now considered the biggest shopping event on the calendar in Australia, Black Friday officially starts on the last Friday in November. But many sales start early and run well into December.
Boxing Day: Traditionally held on December 26, the day after Christmas, with deals that can run for several days or weeks.
End of Financial Year (EOFY): June 30 is the last day of the financial year in Australia, and many retailers have big sales around this time.
Click Frenzy: There are usually three to four Click Frenzy sales per year, such as the big Click Frenzy Main Event in November and Click Frenzy Mayhem in May.
Amazon Prime Day: This sale offers exclusive events for Amazon Prime members. In 2024, the Prime Day sale ran between July 16 and 21, with a huge range of deals. To give you an idea, we found savings of $200 and over 40% on some of our favourite items.
Afterpay Day: This twice-yearly sale gives you a way to save with brands that let you buy now and pay later through you Afterpay account. Afterpay Day sales are usually in March and August.
