Director Tim Burton might be known for his weird and wonderful film aesthetic but his own home is surprisingly traditional. The prolific film director has put his Oxfordshire home on the market for an asking price of £4.5 million (AUD$9.3 million) with Savills Real Estate.

Located in the Oxfordshire village of Abingdon, Burton first purchased the 18th-century Grade II-listed property in 2006 with his partner at the time, actress Helena Bonham Carter. Built in 1741, the property was originally the foreman’s residence for an important paper mill known as Sutton Mill, and rather notably, was later owned by Bonham Carter’s great grandfather, Herbert Henry Asquith, who also happened to be the British Prime Minister between 1908 and 1916.

Occupying 17-acres of beautiful grounds and river frontage on the Thames, the property is everything you would expect of a traditional English country home. The interiors are set across three floors, all of which offer classic Georgian features, including  16-pane sash windows, decorative plaster cornicing, deep skirtings, panelled doors and original fireplaces.

The ground floor contains a grand entrance hall, multiple reception rooms, a dining room and kitchen. These living spaces are decorated quite classically, with plenty of cosy, lived-in furnishings, books and artworks. While the kitchen doesn’t appear on the real estate listing, it is described as having a four-door AGA, walk-in pantry and connected utility and mud room

The main bedroom and four further bedrooms are located on the second floor, with the main bedroom connected to its own bathroom and a smaller bedroom that would make an ideal nursery or dressing room. There’s also two attic bedrooms connected to a small sitting area and bathroom that would be ideal for teenagers or a guest’s retreat.

Outside might be the property’s selling point however, with the grounds made up of beautiful woodland, a string of waterways and three islands. There’s also a formal rose garden, a courtyard garden, croquet lawn and wooden summer house that’s sure to provide plenty of imaginative inspiration.
