Positioned high above the ocean on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the jewel in this apartment’s crown is the sunny and sophisticated kitchen. Interior designer Deborah Bibby transformed the space, enhancing its coastal connection while creating a functional design that perfectly suits empty nesters Juliet and Conrad. “They wanted their kitchen to feel light and natural, yet robust enough to accommodate their young grandchildren and visiting family,” says Deborah.
The renovation involved gutting the original kitchen and starting from scratch. Top of mind was a clutter-free aesthetic. The new design couldn’t obstruct, or compete with, the apartment’s dreamy ocean vistas. Windows reach from ceiling to benchtop behind the basin and Zip ‘HydroTap Celsius Arc’ mixer in Chrome. The glossy splashback is comprised of weathered white zellige tiles from Barefoot Living, laid on the wall adjacent to the view.

Anchor Ceramics ‘Earth’ ceiling lights were selected for their minimal, unobtrusive design, while the appliances are cleverly concealed behind custom V-groove cabinetry in the classic coastal matte shade of Dulux Natural White. Oceanic hues are beautifully echoed through the Atlantic Granite benchtops from Cav’Art and Kelly Wearstler ‘Piper Algae’ fabric on the window seat cushion. “It’s an outdoor fabric to withstand the sun that beams in during the early mornings,” says Deborah.
“Juliet and her family – especially dog Daisy – love this spot.” Conrad and Juliet are delighted with the result. “We feel so lucky to be able to prepare meals in such an open, sunny space looking down at the beautiful beach and ocean below,” she says.

Style notes
The window seat is not just an idyllic spot to curl up and watch the world go by, but also a hardworking, multi-functional piece of furniture. “It’s a lovely gathering spot while a meal is being prepared and it can multitask as seating for the dining table if needed,” says Deborah. “There are three substantial drawers underneath for storing large platters and vases.”
