Form and function have never looked as elegant as in this new family farmhouse laundry. While the utility room is one of the hardest working in any household, on a rural property the space must work twice as hard – especially when it serves as a second entrance. For interior designer Terri Shannon of Bloom Interior Design & Decoration, the enduring nature never meant compromising on style.
Natural sandstone floor tiles were the perfect foundation, grounding the design and offering texture and warmth to balance the cool, calm palette. Shaker-style cabinetry and vertical wall panelling, both in the serene shade of Dulux Sepal, are a nod to traditional farmhouse style. Storage space was essential for functionality’s sake, realised with closed-door cabinetry in the heart of the laundry as well as hooks and a custom solid American oak shelf in the entry.
The timber tones and vertical joinery are repeated in a perfectly fitted bench seat that injects character into the space and, most importantly, a place to sit and kick off the boots after a hard day’s work.
Designer’s tip
Creating character in a hardworking room comes down to colour and texture. “The beautiful palette for this space was duck egg blues and natural sandstone flooring,” says Terri, who suggests opting for heavy-duty materials that will sustain the rigours of laundry life.
Laundry sink details
An American Standard ‘Country’ kitchen sink in White Heat is paired with a Perrin & Rowe bench-mounted mixer with porcelain levers from The English Tapware Company. Carrara white marble benchtops from Apex Stone add a sense of opulence to the room.
