All shades of blue were used to unite the zones in Toad and Mandy’s home – with great success. “A moody shade of blue works as a deep neutral, which allows you to introduce an accent colour to freshen a scheme,” says judge Wendy Moore. Here are some of our favourite uses of this incredibly versatile hue in the latest House Rules reno.

The sapphire-blue kitchen cabinetry

Toad’s ‘blokey’ kitchen came up trumps with its navy blue coloured cabinetry, offset nicely by crisp white butchers’ tiles taken straight up to the ceiling, together with touches of stainless steel in the shelving and kitchen island.

The dark blue feature wall in the dining room

Judge Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen says that he was impressed with the feature wall in the dining room, which helped to create an eclectic take on country style. “There was a bit of Americana in there, there was a bit of French, there was quite traditional British stuff in there and all of these things together made something very new and fresh,” he says. “What really brought it alive was the very strong blue wall either side of the windows, so that was instantly something that felt very much about now.”

The blue and white tiled floor in the boot room

The pretty blue and white patterned tiles, Artisan ‘Oslo’ tiles in Navy from Beaumont Tiles, added a country feel to this very practical room, while still providing a mop-able surface to prevent mud being trekked through the house.

The Art Deco-style tiled bathroom

This is full-on drama, adhering to Toad and Mandy’s request to get dark and moody in an Art Deco master suite. Laurence said he wouldn’t describe the space as calming, but applauded the fact that it would be invigorating, while Drew Heath called the combination of dark vanity and Art Deco-style mirrors, “seductive”.

The decorative rug in the dining room

The ‘Carrelage’ blue hand-woven rug, from Early Settler, provides an anchor point for the traditional dining space, coordinating with the dark blue feature wall opposite and connecting with the kitchen joinery beyond. This room was a hit with all three judges. Drew Heath says it defined the space and was a great way to link all the different areas with a colour palette.
