My in-laws are building a fabulous new house. So of course I offered up my services as Chief Design Officer. I absolutely love building and renovating – even better when it’s with someone else’s money. They invited me to join them on a day out to select all their kitchen, bathroom and laundry finishes. So, plans in hand we got to pairing tiles and stone and hardware. This was not new territory for me. But what I hadn’t noticed until then was a provision on the laundry plan for an LG Styler Steam Closet – aka the most amazing clothes cleaner you’ll ever see. I’m not surprised my mother-in-law wanted one – my son calls her Glammie, because she’s such a glamorous grandmother, always impeccably dressed.

I’d seen the Styler in showrooms before, but it wasn’t until we had one installed in our photo studios at work that I properly got to experience it. For the photo shoot, we put in all the smart clothes – shirts, blazers, delicate knits. But I wanted to really test it out, so I brought in garments that I wear regularly to see if it was just a special-occasion appliance or something I’d use all the time. The results were impressive.
Let’s start with jeans. Some experts say you shouldn’t wash your jeans, but to be honest, I find that concept extremely unappealing. A refresh in the Styler? This is a method I can get on board with. There’s a Sanitary cycle and moving hangers that shake off dust and pollen, so I feel confident they came out clean. Next on the list was a cotton blazer. It drives me crazy how it wrinkles in the elbows and across the back, but if you want to maintain use of your arms, that’s unavoidable. Let me tell you, the handheld steamer on the Styler packs a punch! It’s very quick and easy to use, and there’s a water receptacle, so it’s not plumbed in (I had wondered about that).

I also rotate my cushions and throws depending on the season, so I put some of those into the Styler, too, to test out the results. As with the garments: so fresh. So clean. To really push the experiment, when no one was looking, I brought in my husband’s golf tops, my son’s soft toys and a black-tie gown that I’ve only worn once. How did they fare?
To be honest, the golf tops were fresher, but I would still put them through the wash. The soft toys and gown, however, came up a treat – they looked and smelled pristine. Anyone who’s tried washing toys will know they’re rarely the same afterwards. And dry-cleaning bills on evening wear can be extortionate, so I’m pleased to report that the Styler approach negates that cost.

The cherry on top is the option of a reflective door – it does double duty as a full-length mirror so you can check your outfit, but it blends beautifully into the room. So, will I get one for my own home? Sadly, I lack the space. But you bet I’ll be taking basket-loads of garments and toys to my in-laws to use theirs. (Apologies in advance!)
