The start of spring also signals the beginning of the Australian wedding season. While gift registries and wishing wells generally take the stress out of finding the right gift for the newlyweds, some couples leave things a little more open-ended. And when it’s a close friend or family member is getting married, it’s not uncommon to want to give something a little more meaningful to accompany your wishing well contribution.
That said, selecting the right wedding gift isn’t always an easy task. These days, couples have generally been living together a while before tying the knot, leaving traditional gifts like dinner sets and glassware less practical choices.
Unless you know that a couple wants something very specific, the safest wedding gifts tend to be things that you can have more than one of. The best wedding gift that my husband and I recieved was from my mum, who bought us a new set of bath towels. Towels always need replacing and it felt very luxurious to not have to buy them ourselves.
There are also practical items a couple may need after the wedding. Something as simple as a quality photo frame for their wedding pictures can be surprisingly valuable, given how quickly the costs of framing can add up. Beyond the practical, there are plenty of thoughtful experiences you can gift to help them celebrate newlywed life, such as an Airbnb voucher for a weekend away or a restaurant voucher for a romantic date night.
Unless you know very well, it’s best to stick to neutrals for any homewares that you buy them, helping the items blend effortlessly in with their existing style. And if it comes down to it, a fancy bottle of champagne is always a winner.
