Whether you’ve got your own beachside abode, or simply want to evoke a holiday feel at home, here are eight ways to create a relaxed coastal vibe.

Incorporate forgiving surfaces

Precious finishes which require lots of upkeep can hamper a laid back vibe. Instead, choose flooring which can disguise sandy footprints and benchtops which are stain resistant. Try Premium Oak Blanc flooring from Carpet Court.

Forage greenery

Living greenery creates a connection to nature. If you can’t manage pot plants, snip a few fronds from the garden to display in vases around the house. It doesn’t need to be perfectly arranged, over-sized and wild can look great. Try Oz Design Furniture for a statement glass vase.

Layer texture

A layered look filled with different tactile elements is instantly inviting. Timber furnishings and details are a great way to add warmth. Cluster table-tops with a collection of ceramics and top sofas with throws and textural cushions in different materials.

Add a burst of colour

70s beach shacks embraced colour with abandon. While you may not want lime green benchtops or a retro pink bathroom, take a more sophisticated approach and draw colour cues from the natural surrounds and incorporate softer shades like green, grey or blue to accent a neutral palette. Mix new and old

To cultivate a relaxed lived-in feel, mix up furniture pieces. A home-made table built from salvaged timber can look great paired with a classic Bentwood chair. Gumtree and local garage sales can be a treasure trove for vintage pieces.

Be unexpected

Look to incorporate a few fun features which add character – a salvaged branch which doubles as a hat rack, an old ladder as a towel holder, a tree stump as a side table, or an old chest which can be used as a coffee table.

Make it bright and breezy

Embrace the elements with an abundance of windows and glass doors you can throw open to enjoy the breeze and if you’re lucky enough, the sound of the surf, on a hot summers day.

Invest in classics

Comfort is key in furnishing a beach house, so look to incorporate a generous sofa and plenty of sink-into-chairs where the whole family can put their feet up. For enduring good looks it’s hard to beat neutral toned pieces with washable slipcovers.
