Real Housewife Krissy Marsh is Sydney’s queen of home cleaning, but apparently her secret lies in a simple homemade cleaning product you can make yourself.

You’ve probably heard a hundred and one ideas for DIY cleaning products, but Krissy claims to have hit the jackpot with one particular solution using vinegar, essential oils and water. “If you look at most of the cleaning products you use at home, the majority ingredient is water. So, you’re basically paying for water you get out of your own tap,” Krissy shared on The Edit podcast. “People don’t realise how easy all this is. And it’s so cost effective!”

Krissy prefers to use chemical-free cleaning products in her home, which ultimately led to her honing her own all-purpose spray recipe. So, if you’re looking for a natural, non-toxic cleaning spray — scroll on for Krissy’s exact recipe.

Makes: Approx. 1 litre

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon mild liquid dish soap (e.g. Castile soap)
  • 1 litre hot water
  • ¼ cup white distilled vinegar
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil*

*Note: You can replace or add eucalyptus oil, too.

Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle (1 litre+) and shake to combine. Use to spray and wipe down surfaces.
If you have smaller spray bottles, combine the ingredients in a large bowl or pot, then distribute between multiple bottles.

Tip: Some people have an intolerance to fragrance, including essential oils. For a non-toxic, fragrance-free cleaning solution, you can use this recipe without any essential oils (lavender, eucalyptus etc), and use an unscented dish soap.

What can I clean with homemade all-purpose spray?

This all-purpose spray recipe is designed for most surfaces, including those in the kitchen, bathroom, living room and laundry.

You can also use it to clean your toilet or shower, Krissy just says to sprinkle some bi-carbonate soda first, then spray and scrub.

Bi-carb, with the help of the vinegar, is more abrasive, and can lift dirt and cut through grease, grime and stains.

When not to use white vinegar for cleaning

Avoid using vinegar cleaning spray on surfaces made from natural stone (marble, granite, quartz). Also, don’t use it on other surfaces where the acidity of the vinegar may strip away the surface, including hardwood floors or screens (TV, laptops screens). In small, diluted quantities (like in this recipe) it’s fine to use on tile grout, however, don’t use vinegar directly on grout as it can be too corrosive.
