Beautiful Queensland mansion restored

Building an architect-designed extension for this lovely, century-old heritage-listed home has created more liveable space. Keen to retain many of the original features, architect Chris Lillis designed around the billowy old camphor laurel tree, a link to the property’s past. Glass balustrading was installed by the pool to mark where the old house finishes and new extension begins, and delivers a contemporary edge.

Deep tones were chosen for the formal living room. The walls are painted in Dulux Grey Squirrel, and white trims highlight the exquisite architectural details. A Sharon Fuller work, One Choc Pod, hangs above the fireplace, an original feature. The mantel is adorned with a KT Doyle embroidered linen artwork, titled Collected Patterns 1. 

Rosewood timber screens by Rycon separate the main living room from the reading nook. Bespoke chairs complete the cosy look.

In the kitchen, cabinetry in Resene Triple Bison Hide and a Calacatta marble-clad island continue the neutral scheme. The bar stools, custom-made by Comax, help create a social hub. In the extension, wide cornices and high ceilings were carried through from the original house, creating a cohesive look. Floral ‘Unique Aruba’ cushions from Les Salles make a statement against creamy sofas from King Furniture. The ‘Casa Harmony’ hand-knotted Tibetan wool rug is from Hip Home.

A trio of David Trubridge ‘Taniko’ pendants is suspended over the New Guinea rosewood dining table, which was custom-made by Allkind Joinery. The banquette seating was built by Comax, and is covered in Mokum’s ‘Lillypilly’ fabric.

Sicis ‘Glimmer’ mosaics from Aeria Country Floors add instant glamour in the chic ensuite.

Sonia Rykiel bath towels and a Missoni bathmat, all from Ollie and Lloyd, provide a striking contrast to the Pietre Orte ‘Listello’ wall tiles. By the bath stands a zinc tripod table from Les Salles. For a similar bath, try ‘Mizu Drift’ freestanding bath from Reece.

Neutral colours create an airy and fresh feel in the pretty bedroom, which has a traditional feel thanks to the panelled walls.

Carefully chosen accessories play on the colonial elements of the original structure, adding top the home’s historic charm.
