This Melbourne home takes its cues from monochrome Manhattan

Highlights of gleaming gold and luxe marble melds with moody black and white in this renovated heritage home.

New York warehouse-style living is apparent throughout, with characterful concrete benchtops, reclaimed timber flooring, exposed recycled-brick feature walls and a show stopper of a solid rusted-steel sliding door.

Living room

The charcoal sofa from Dare Gallery is layered with a ‘Miami’ velvet cushion by Elitis and Safari Living’s ‘Seul Sakai’ cushion. The pair of black ‘Deja’ marble-topped coffee tables from Birds Of A Feather tie in with the striking Vietnamese artwork purchased at In Curtains & Blinds.

The steel door that divides the new living area from the original section of the home appears to be richly marked with the patina of decades. But it’s actually a new custom-made piece, cleverly fabricated and installed by Warragul Sheetmetal.

Kitchen and dining

The ‘Western Grey’ reclaimed floorboards from Historical Timber Floors are carried through to the kitchen. The versatile ‘Kasting’ dining table (for similar, try Weylandts), teamed with replica Eames ‘Eiffel DSW’ chairs from Kogan feature in this space.

Bedrooom

Understated yet opulent, the bedroom has been furnished with a well-considered mix of high-design pieces. The ‘Essex’ bedhead is from Maison Est and the bed is layered with an array of cushions including a sequinned ‘Siren’ cushion from Fenton & Fenton, and a Missoni Home floral cushion. The ‘Sigmund’ throw from Safari Living and a plush black velvet bedspread – custom-made by In Curtains & Blinds – complement the monochrome aesthetic. The gold-metal frame of the marble-topped bedside table has found its perfect match with a replica Tom Dixon ‘Etch Web’ rose-gold pendant from GoLights.

Ensuite

Framed by a floor-to-ceiling picture window that presents the treetops as a living artwork, this is one truly beautiful bathroom. A freestanding ‘Olsen’ bath from Schots Home Emporium invites a long soak. On the porcelain tiles, the ‘Otil’ flower bath mat from Safari Living delivers a delightful touch of whimsy. The Matt porcelain tiles in Concrete Grey are from Elegance Tiles by Artistic Tile Design.

Study

In the compact but functional study, yellow pendants (for similar try Temple & Webster) are an adventurous and cheerful addition. On the wall above the desk, a Pickawall wallpaper mural of a map of Melbourne city is proving useful wall art for interstate guests.

Living room

In a light-soaked corner, a leather ‘Ray’ recliner from Voyager Interiors has been layered with a cosy reindeer hide (for similar, try Fenton & Fenton). On the adjacent wall, a remarkable painting bought in Bangkok brings a refreshing burst of blue to the neutral room.

Guest bathroom

The star of this room is the two-metre-high silver gilded mirror which was purchased on eBay. Infused with a traditionally elegant vibe, a freestanding claw-foot bath from Cast Iron Baths and glossy black subway-style tiles from Artistic Tile Design lend glamour to the wash zone. A black retro stool by HK Living adds further charm and practicality.
