A little French provincial decorating goes a long way and in the HB office, we love ourselves a frolic through the odd centuries-old castle.
A former designer and co-founder of powerhouse Australian fashion design house Sass and Bide Heidi Middleton naturally owns a French chateau all of her own… as you do.
Originally built in 183, lovingly renovated by Middleton since her purchase in 2016 and photographed many times since, for fashion and lifestyle shoots, ‘Les Tourelles’ is in the village of Saint Christoly de Medoc, an hour or so outside Bordeaux. The four-bedroom, two storey property has all the trappings of a dreamy French provincial lifestyle – yawning great fireplaces, original wooden staircases and sweeping stone balconies overlooking the nearby village.
The renovation is next level and quite unexpected in a home of this age. Oodles of charm, layered with contemporary finishes, celebrated architectural detail and practical custom storage – some of which stretches to full breathtaking ceiling heights. The once-rustic kitchen has been modernised for entertaining with a walk-in pantry and high-end appliances.
Grand sandstone arches feature throughout the home, which has modern light fittings and generous living areas – all setting the scene for the most fabulous lifestyle. Outside is a stunning in-ground swimming pool set in fully landscaped gardens, adjacent to walled courtyards, perfect for summer entertaining beneath ancient trees.
The property was open for rent during the 2018 European summer and is reportedly now the market for EUR900,000 – about AUD$1,422,000 which compared to Sydney housing prices is surprisingly affordable.
