Expert tips for smarter mattress shopping this Boxing Day

When it comes to choosing the right mattress, the sheer volume of options can prove a little overwhelming. That’s why, to help you make sense of common mattress features and identify which ones matter to you, we enlisted the help of sleep expert Ken Lau, otherwise known as the Co-Founder of Eva.

What’s the difference between budget, mid-range, and high-end mattresses?

Think of it like looking under the hood of a car. Not all mattresses are made the same. The difference between budget, mid-range, and high-end really comes down to the materials, how they’re made, and the time that goes into production.

Budget mattresses are usually simple to make, mostly polyester, and rarely include natural materials. They can do the job for a couple of years, but might wear out faster and do not offer the same support or comfort as higher-quality options. Mid-range mattresses use better materials like cotton, tencel, or latex, which makes them more comfortable, breathable, and durable. High-end mattresses take it even further, often handcrafted with natural and expensive materials, and built to last over a decade.

You will also notice the difference in how they feel. Budget tends to be basic and firmer, mid-range provides more support and comfort, and high-end often adapts to your body, helping with pressure relief and temperature regulation. Many high-end mattresses also come with longer warranties, trial periods, and better aftercare so you can feel confident in your investment. Basically, the more thought and quality that goes into the mattress, the better your sleep will be and the longer it will last.

What mattress features make for a great night’s sleep?

A great night’s sleep really depends on the sleeper. There is no one mattress that suits everyone, so it’s important to understand your own sleeping style. Side sleepers usually do best with something medium to medium-firm, so your hips sink in just enough to keep your spine aligned. Back sleepers tend to prefer something firmer. Picking the right firmness for your sleeping position is half the battle.

The material also matters. Some people love the contouring feel of memory foam, while others prefer the bounce and support of latex. At Eva, we offer both options so you can find what suits you. Once you’ve chosen, you also need to give yourself a little time to break in your mattress, almost like breaking in a new pair of shoes. After that, you’re set for better, more comfortable sleep.

What should shoppers consider when choosing between firm and soft mattresses?

When choosing between firm and soft mattresses, it really comes down to your sleeping style. Side sleepers usually need something medium to medium-firm so their hips and shoulders can sink in just enough to keep their spine aligned. Back sleepers tend to do better with a firmer mattress that supports their lower back. Basically, the right firmness matches how you sleep. That’s half the battle for a great night’s sleep.

If you were to buy a brand new mattress tomorrow, which one would you choose and why?

Definitely the Premium Adapt Mattress. I actually sleep on one now, and since hitting my 30s, I’ve realised my back isn’t quite as forgiving as it used to be. What I love about this mattress is that I’ve been able to adjust the layers over the years as my needs have changed. It’s one of those things you don’t think you’ll need until you do and then you’re so glad you have it.
