I have finally found my dream rug

My search for the perfect blue-grey rug is over. I'm in love.
Otago Blue Ash Washable Wool Berber Rug reviewAlice Ierace

After months, maybe even years, of searching for the perfect soft blue/grey rug for my living room, I finally discovered the new Double 100% New Zealand wool Berber rug… and to make matters better, it’s machine washable, which with a dog and 2 children, is an absolute game-changer.

I had been on the hunt for a beautiful, coloured, plush, good-quality rug that would fit into the style of our home. Having had a previous disaster with a rug which started off forest green and ended up swampy brown, despite never being in direct sunlight, I was nervous… and picky.

Results from our test

I chose the colour ‘Otago’ in 200 x 300cm, which retails at $1990. Described as ethereal as morning mist… It’s the perfect calming grey blue tone to complement my living room aesthetic, which leans towards mid-century minimalism.

The first thing to mention is the sheer plushness and thickness of this rug. You instantly know you’re walking on wool – it is so soft underfoot and to lie on – you just sink into the pile. It has been given a big tick from all of the family in terms of the warmth and comfort.

Ordered online, the rug arrives boxed with a mat which is easy to lay down with the PVC pad underneath. The top rug settled fairly quickly with the creases disappearing in no time. We pressed it straight into service in our living room and so far, so good, nothing has slipped or moved. With all of our busy goings on, this was an important consideration for our family of four.

Overall, is the Otago Blue Ash Washable Wool Berber Rug worth it?

I love the look and feel, and am now content that I have finally found the missing piece for our living room. It pairs so beautifully with our timber sideboard and allows my prized Jardan side table to retain centre stage.

Full disclosure: I adore this rug, but as it’s quite new, I haven’t washed it yet. Watch this space for when that happens.
