Six ways to save money on your bathroom reno

Keep your costs down
Shania Shegedyn

According to the 2016/17 Kitchens and Bathrooms Report by the Housing Industry Association, bathrooms installed between those years as part of a renovation cost around $17,054, and that 72 per cent of bathroom renovations are done in homes aged between 11 to 20 years old. Clearly, it costs a lot of money to transform a dated bathroom into a slick space with all the modern conveniences. Luckily, there are several ways you can save money during your bathroom renovation, or update your bathroom on a tight budget.

1. Tapware

Tapware is something you can shop for online, and if you stick to classic shapes and designs, you can get away with paying as little as $50 for basic chrome tapware. You can locate trendy rose gold, black and matt tapware online from as little as $90. Whatever you choose, make sure all the tapware in your bathroom has the same finish and similar design for a polished look.

2. Handles

Similar to tapware, ensuring all your bathroom cabinetry have the same handles is important for creating a luxe feel. Basic handles in classic finishes are available from retailers for as little as $20, but the price points can sky-rocket from there. Better products to spend your money on in a bathroom update are high-quality tiles, a lovely bath or new shower frame.

3. Mirrors

While mirrors can make quite the statement in bathrooms, you don’t have to drop the big bucks to do so. Places like Ikea offer great designs at budget prices that won’t compromise the look, quality or feel of your bathroom.

4. Toilet roll holder

The humble toilet roll holder is a bathroom product very few people pay close attention to. You can pick up a suitably slick toilet roll holder from Bunnings or Spotlight from as little as $15. Invest your money in the larger and more dominant aspects of a bathroom update that will have greater influence on the over-all look.

5. Towel Racks

Similar to toilet roll holders, you can pick up a multi-functional and moisture-resistant towel rack in a chrome finish for under $100 both online and in-store. Even better, add character to your bathroom by using salvaged and re-finished materials for a towel rack.

6. Toilet

A bathroom essential, the toilet is a bathroom product that can easily set you back hundreds of dollars, even thousands, if you go for a high end model. However, you can pick up a basic toilet with a four-star WELS rating from as little as $70 if you look in the right places.
