After designing her way through the sets of some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters (think The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge…) and winning awards as head designer for Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, Silvana Azzi Hera has turned her hand to real life interiors in a spectacular collaboration with Designer Rugs.

“Can’t repeat the past?…Why of course you can!”

Boutique design studio House Of Heras specialise in highly decorative designs on textiles and wallpapers and the latest Designer Rugs collaboration focuses on Australian flora and fauna through the lens of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Brilliant botanicals leap off the floor in vibrant colours and opulent designs that are a divinely contemporary take on an old-world style of home decoration.

“I’ve always been inspired to create homewares that I would want in my home, or my friends’ homes, and that can inspire a mood or start a conversation,” says Heras of her debut range.

Hera’s rugs are influenced by the work of Lucien Henry and Josef Frank and have sprung from the desire to create interiors that are high end and opulent, yet give the simple comforting pleasure of being at home surrounded by wonderful things, “…giving enough detail and points of interest to match back to other elements of the room,” says Heras.

“I truly believe that beautiful design is a-contextual – rather than defining a space, my rug designs inform it.”

We agree. Tying the look to any interior would be a breeze – they would work to striking effect as a show-stopping centre piece in a minimal contemporary space, or give a modern edge to a mid-century modern setting with natural timbers and white-painted walls.
