A little comfort in a chaotic world.

The humble patchwork quilt has emerged as the unlikely must-have interiors item of 2026. As the rise of nostalgia-driven interior movements, such as cottagecore and coastal grandmother, see more people embrace the comfort of antiques, colour and handcrafted pieces, the cosy familiarity of a patchwork quilt is experiencing a renewed appeal.

Traditionally, a patchwork quilt was something that your grandmother would have made you, with these cosy pieces typically being passed down through the generations of a family. These days, brands like The Six Bells, are pioneering the quilt’s revival with their now viral selection of Americana-inspired, Shaker-style designs.

These vintage-inspired quilts are now staples in farmhouse style home’s like this one in Upstate New York. Even celebrity Kendall Jenner’s luxury mountain home leans into this country character with cosy Nissa Sorenson quilts layered over her couches and the ends of beds.

In today’s ever-so-shaky political climate, it’s not surprising that people are reaching for more home comforts. Rather than simply being about romanticising the past, these real materials, colour and handcrafted items feel like an antidote to the corporate grey palettes, fast fashion brands and social media trends that seem to dictate our lives.

Whether it’s wrapped around you on a cold winter’s night or thrown over your favourite armchair, a patchwork quilt can be a small piece of comfort in a chaotic world.

Where to buy patchwork quilts in Australia

In Australia, quilts can be referred to as a quilt, coverlet or bedspread. While traditional Americana-style quilts aren’t as easily sourced in Australia, you will have more luck on places like Etsy. However, stores like Pottery Barn and West Elm are increasingly offering these kind of designs. Colourful Indian style patterned quilts can be more easily sourced from stores like Piggots and other smaller brick-and-mortor boutiques.

Facebook Marketplace and your local op-shop are also great places to source true vintage patchwork quilts. If you ask extra nicely, you might even find that an older relative may be happy to make you one.
