Long before “colour drenching” dominated Pinterest feeds and olive kitchens became the design trend of the decade, Dakota Johnson’s house quietly became one of the internet’s most recognisable celebrity homes.

The actress’s West Hollywood retreat became an unlikely viral sensation in 2020 after appearing on Architectural Digest’s Open Door series.

Inside Dakota Johnson’s iconic ‘lime house’

While millions admired the perfectly curated olive-green kitchen, it was a simple bowl of limes that stole the show. Years later, Johnson admitted the fruit was purely decorative.

“I’m actually allergic to limes,” she confessed during an interview, explaining the bowl had been styled as a prop, instantly creating one of social media’s most beloved celebrity moments.

Now, the house that inspired countless mood boards has found a buyer after hitting the market for USD$6 million (around AUD$8.3 million).

A mid-century masterpiece hidden among the trees

Built in 1947 by celebrated California modernist architect Carl Maston, the three-bedroom residence sits discreetly above the Chateau Marmont in one of West Hollywood’s most exclusive pockets.

Rather than competing with the surrounding landscape, the architecture of Dakota Johnson’s house almost disappears into it.

Walls of glass dissolve into gardens, mature trees shade almost every outdoor space and a narrow lap pool stretches alongside the living pavilion, making the entire property feel less like a Hollywood mansion and more like a luxurious treehouse.

Dakota herself once described it as:

“Like a tree house. On a boat.”

We love…

The unapologetically green kitchen.

Long before sage cabinetry became mainstream, Dakota embraced floor-to-ceiling olive joinery paired with Carrara marble, white subway tiles, brass accents and open glass-fronted cupboards filled with everyday ceramics.

It feels collected rather than styled, proving that colour works best when it becomes part of the architecture instead of simply an accent.

The kitchen that broke the internet

The famous kitchen isn’t especially large. Instead, it’s warm, intimate and filled with personality.

Olive cabinetry wraps every wall, while marble benchtops brighten the space and skylights flood it with natural light. Copper cookware, collected ceramics and vintage rugs soften the clean lines of the mid-century architecture. Perhaps that’s why it resonated so strongly online. Unlike many celebrity homes, it felt genuinely lived in. The only thing missing from the latest listing photos?

The infamous bowl of limes.

Pierce & Ward’s quietly eclectic makeover

After purchasing the home, Dakota enlisted acclaimed interiors studio Pierce & Ward to gently reinvent the space. Rather than erase its mid-century bones, the designers celebrated them. Warm timber panelling wraps bedrooms and studies, poured concrete floors add an industrial edge, while vintage furniture, layered rugs and contemporary art stop the home feeling like a museum piece.

Even the primary ensuite tells a story. Its blush-pink cabinetry was reportedly inspired by one of Dakota’s favourite sweaters from The Row, creating a surprisingly soft contrast against the home’s darker timber palette.

A garden that feels worlds away from Hollywood

Despite sitting minutes from the Sunset Strip, Dakota Johnson’s house feels remarkably secluded.

Mature trees surround the house, creating pockets of outdoor living connected by stone paths, terraces, fire pits and hidden seating areas. Glass walls open directly onto the lap pool, while oversized trees filter sunlight across almost every room. It’s a home designed to slow you down—a rare quality in one of Los Angeles’ busiest neighbourhoods.

Dakota’s growing property portfolio

While saying goodbye to her famous green kitchen, Dakota isn’t leaving Los Angeles behind. Property records link her to a Mediterranean-style residence in prestigious Outpost Estates purchased for around USD$5.3 million in late 2025. The four-bedroom home is believed to be her new primary residence.

She also previously owned a Malibu property with former partner Chris Martin, which the pair sold for a significant profit after purchasing it for USD$12.5 million.
