The English country kitchen bringing timeless charm to suburban Brisbane

With sage green cabinetry, woven pendants and a furniture-style island, this renovated Brisbane kitchen proves practical family living can still feel beautifully nostalgic.

White ‘Ivy Willow’ bi-fold barn doors from Front Porch Properties facilitate a seamless connection between the family’s kitchen and alfresco area, while the high cathedral ceilings, accentuated with woven Ivory & Deene pendants and exposed rafters, add to the lovely, airy feel. This bright, tactile appeal was just the ticket. “As the rest of the ground floor has relatively low ceilings, the extra height in the extension helps draw the eye up and distracts from the lower ceilings throughout,” explains Rachael.

This pretty kitchen may be nestled in a leafy suburb in Brisbane’s north, but it channels all the charm of an English country home. Belonging to a busy professional couple with four young children, the kitchen was designed as part of a new extension added to the original home, which underwent a renovation led by builder and designer Rachael Turner of Front Porch Properties.

“I was excited to work with a couple who valued restoration over demolition,” says Rachael, who explains that the homeowners had previously been encouraged to knock down their house and start afresh. Instead, the family were looking to embrace nostalgic delights in their kitchen design.

“The brief was to create a very charming but highly practical kitchen for the family of six,” says Rachael, who found that a modern English cottage aesthetic perfectly brought the homeowner’s vision to life.

Giving a kitchen a fresh new look is never a simple feat, especially when the homeowners are a busy family of six. For Rachael Turner of Front Porch Properties, functionality hinged on the custom island design. “The kitchen island was intentionally designed to feel like a freestanding piece of furniture, with a timber benchtop so it feels more like a dining table than a typical island bench,” she explained. Sweet country-style details are introduced through the reclaimed timber that frames the wide farmhouse sink, by swapping a traditional tiled splashback for VJ panelling in Dulux Natural White, and with Shaker-style custom cabinetry, which is hand-painted in Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog.

“The colour was chosen by our client,” says Rachael. “It’s a shade she has always loved and it brings a calm, timeless and naturally pretty feel to the space.”

Rachael included plenty of functionality with clever design details, such as custom pull-out chopping boards, integrated bins, concealed power points and deep drawers fitted with USB points so the family can charge devices.

With the perfect balance of charm and practicality, this kitchen is truly magical.
