When it comes to selecting a good heater, energy efficiency should be your number one concern. An energy efficient heater will not only keep you warm but save you money on your power bill as well.

While reverse-cycle air-conditioners tend to be the most energy efficient way to heat your home (according the Australian Government’s Energy Rating website), these systems aren’t an option for everyone – and that’s where portable heaters come into play.

Portable heaters may be electric, gas or oil-operated, and operate through fan, convection or radiant heat systems. While one type isn’t necessarily more energy efficient than another, certain models certainly are. To help you (and your energy bill) this winter, we have found the most energy efficient heaters to buy in Australia.

How to choose an energy efficient heater

When it comes to finding the most energy efficient heater, there are a few things you’re going to want to consider.

Energy rating: You should always check the Energy Rating of an appliance before you purchase it. This rating will essentially tell you how effectively a heater will be able to convert your energy into heat.

Size of your space: Before purchasing a heater, it’s important to think about the space you want it to heat. For larger or open-plan spaces, you’re going to need a heater than can evenly distribute heat, such as oil column or radiant heaters. While more compact electric or radiant heaters will be more energy efficient for smaller spaces.

Functions: Different heaters will come with different functions. Some of the most energy efficient functions include timers, which give you control over when you want the room heated (and not heated) and self-regulating thermostats, which can base the output of heat off the temperature of the room.
