Side Sleepers: “Opt for a medium to firm pillow that is ideally thick enough to fill the space between your head and shoulder, keeping your spine aligned.”
Back Sleepers: “A medium-loft pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck is ideal.”
Stomach Sleepers: “A thin and soft pillow is recommended, assuming a pillow is really needed for this position, to lessen any pressure placed on the neck and spine.”

What should you look for when purchasing a pillow?
To find the best pillow that’s right for you, you need to understand what kind of sleeper you are. “Your sleeping position will dictate the most important factors of the pillow such as firmness and thickness,” says the APAC Product Success Team at Emma Sleep. “For example, for back sleepers, it is generally recommended to choose pillows with medium height and medium firmness to get the support needed for the neck. For side sleepers on the other hand, a thicker and firmer pillow is recommended to keep the spine aligned and to keep your neck away from sagging too much. For stomach sleepers, it would be best to get a thin but soft pillow, because thicker ones would push your neck backward which will cause neck strains.”
Other important factors, such as materials used and adjustability, depend on your personal preferences.
Materials: Different materials in pillows each offer their own pros and cons to your sleep comfort and support. Foam options such as memory foam have been a popular choice in pillows as it is designed to support the natural alignment of the spine. “Some pillows use special types of foams which can contour and adjust to the shape of your head and neck which is typically great for support. Other special foams have cooling features when used which can help keep your head cool as you sleep,” says Emma Sleep. Other materials include feathers which are soft, fluffy and popular among pillow huggers, or polyester as a more affordable alternative. Latex, buckwheat, or beads are other specialised materials which can be found in certain pillows. Make sure to do your own research and monitor your sleep position to find what works best for you.
Breathability: “Breathability is important for sleep products because these can help regulate your body’s temperature as you sleep. Better temperature regulation means better prevention of overheating, which may result in better sleep quality,” says Emma Sleep. The material of both the cover and filling of the pillow will affect its breathability. “For the filling materials, latex is popular moisture-wicking material and is known to be breathable too, but there have been special treatments done with foams which can give them thermoregulating properties by helping the body dissipate body heat as you sleep.” When it comes to covers, look for lightweight, breathable fabrics with moisture-wicking properties, such as bamboo or cotton.
Adjustability: “Some pillows have special features which allow users to adjust parts of the pillows to their preference – whether shape, size, height, or level of firmness.” This can be done by removing the layers or filling to suit your sleep position.
How often should a pillow be replaced?
A pillows lifespan will vary based on the material and usage. “Being strict to a number of years can cause more harm than good here,” says Emma Sleep. Instead of counting the years you had a specific pillow, ask yourself if the pillow is still currently giving you both the comfort and support you need from it. If not, that is the best time you can consider changing your pillow.”
“The durability of pillows would also vary from product to product. That is why it’s recommended also to get pillows from brands who are known to be good quality and confident on their warranty services.”
