Striking the right chord between heritage charm and modern functionality was key to this kitchen renovation in a terrace in Sydney’s Inner West. The homeowners – a professional couple with two young children – enlisted Lori Murray, founder of March Twice Interiors, for the balancing act. “The homeowners loved the classical details already and wanted any new elements to feel cohesive, yet family-friendly and highly functional,” she says.
While the original kitchen was serviceable, it lacked storage and failed to connect with the rest of the home’s character. Lori addressed this by introducing a detailed Shaker-style profile on the wall-to-wall cabinetry, swathed in Porter’s Paints Blue Steel. As she describes, “It’s rich and dark, yet muted enough to sit quietly alongside the rest of the home’s finishes.”

The blue shade is paired with aged brass mesh inserts above the quartzite splashback – this light stone brings a sense of calm, acting as a counterpoint to the darker palette. Metallic accents add a warm flourish, including brass cabinet pulls from Momo Handles, a Brodware ‘Manhattan’ pull-out kitchen mixer in Roma Bronze and a ‘Griffin Grande Linear’ chandelier from Bloomingdales Lighting. ‘Markson’ bar stools in Tan Vegan Leather from Coco Republic complement perfectly.
The family couldn’t be happier with their new space. “The kitchen has become a natural gathering point when they can find moments together in their busy family routine,” says Lori.
