I invited my entire family over then put this robot vacuum to the test

The future is here and it involves less house work.

As someone who lives in a two-bedroom apartment, I’ve never felt the need to invest in a high-end robot vacuum and mop. After all, my home is relatively compact, I don’t have children, and my only pet is a fish (so no shedding fur to contend with!). But when I was offered a trial of Ecovacs’ newest release, the Deebot T80S Omni vacuum and mop, I knew just how to put it to the test.

The offer came the week before Easter, when I was due to return to my childhood home for a long weekend with 8 adults and 5 children, aka my entire family. How would the latest offering from Ecovacs fare against smushes of melted chocolate, blades of dirt-covered grass tracked in on the bottom of shoes, and ample hot cross bun crumbs?

Ecovacs Deebot T80S Omni review verdict

  • Our rating: (8 out of 10)
  • Why we rated it a (8/10): This is undoubtedly a clever robot. I watched it learn from previous mistakes, finding new ways to clean areas without getting stuck. My favourite feature? The increased suction power on carpets and rugs. As someone with asthma and dust allergies, this was really exciting to see. However, it wasn’t a 10/10 as the app interface could be more intuitive and there have been legitimate security concerns in the past with Ecovacs products.

Pros

  • A truly clever piece of technology with good obstacle avoidance and navigation
  • All-in-one robot vacuum and mop
  • Automatically increases suction power on carpets and rugs
  • Manages to clean corners and along skirting boards effectively
  • It’s less expensive than other Ecovacs robot vacuums and mops
  • Automatically empties the dustbin into a larger container, which you’ll only need to empty once every 90 days or so

Cons

  • The app interface could be more intuitive and user-friendly
  • I did require set up assitance from my husband, who works in IT (yes, I’m a stereotype)
  • Be aware of the security vulnerability that some devices may pose

What’s so special about the Ecovacs Deebot T80S robot vacuum and mop?

As someone who had only ever used very cheap robot vacuum cleaners, this model is definitely a superior product that makes use of superior technology. Obstacle avoidance, AI navigation and increased suction power are all superb.

  • Includes Ecovacs’ ZeroTangle brush system, which aims to minimise hair tangle around the roller. As someone who has long hair, this piqued my interest.
  • The brushes have an excellent range, reaching right into corners despite the circular form of the robot vacuum and mop.
  • The Triple Lift system detects whether a hard or soft flooring surface is underneath and will adjust accordingly. This means carpets stay dry while hard flooring gets a good scrub.
  • The suction power of 24,800 PA is one of the best on the market.
  • A lot of the upkeep happens automatically. The full-service docking station automatically empties the dustbin into a larger storage unit, which can carry up to 90 days’ worth of storage. It also washes the mop with hot water and dries it with heated air drying to keep the mop cleaner for longer.

I was especially impressed by how the vacuum moved from hard flooring to soft, going into what I dubbed “turbo mode” on carpet.

How to use the latest Ecovacs robot vacuum and mop

The initial set-up was definitely the hardest part of the process for me. The instructions were simple. I removed the packaging, connected the little ramp to the docking station and plugged everything in. I then scanned the QR code to download the Ecovacs app.

To set up the robot vacuum and mop, you need to download the Ecovacs app, then lift the lid on your vacuum. Scan the QR code positioned underneath the lid to connect your device with the app.

Once the app was downloaded on my phone, I removed the vacuum lid to scan the next QR code, which would connect my robot with my app. While the vacuum connected easily to the wifi, it took quite a few attempts before it connected to the Ecovacs server. Maybe this was because I was attempting it on Easter Monday, maybe it was just a slow day for the server. Either way, my husband eventually got it working.

Once this set-up was done, the vacuum did most of the legwork. It did a lap to map out my parents’ house before starting to clean. At first, my dad started moving cords and pieces of furniture so the vacuum wouldn’t get caught up. However, it soon became clear this wasn’t necessary. This vacuum has exceptional object avoidance.

You can control the device from the app (cleaning the house while no one is home? Ideal), but also from the power button on top of the vacuum.

Results from our test

This is the best robot vacuum cleaner I’ve ever used. To be fair, you should take this with a grain of salt. My husband and I bought one of the cheapest options on the market and that’s my point of reference. We love our old faithful cheap robot, but it gets stuck everywhere, doesn’t avoid anything, and the suction is simply not strong enough on carpets and rugs. But the Ecovacs Deebot T80S Omni? I can see why the price point is so different.

As a vacuum cleaner, it worked really effectively, managing to pick up dirt and debris I didn’t think it would be able to reach (especially in regards to corners). The extra suction power on soft flooring was wonderful. My parents’ rug had gotten pretty filthy (I don’t want to place blame, but I’m pretty sure that was thanks to my nieces, their Easter eggs, plus all the dirt and grass they tracked in from the egg hunt). The Ecovacs Deebot did a great job of cleaning the rug.

The vacuum did get stuck in one spot a few times. It only just fit under my parents’ TV unit, and the middle of this unit was ever so slightly lower than the rest. However, it learned from each attempt to clean this area, eventually figuring out how close it could get to the middle without issue. It wasn’t getting stuck multiple times because it hadn’t learned – it was cataloguing the exact spot it had issues with so that it could clean as much of the area as possible without issue. I appreciated that it took a few attempts for it to learn instead of avoiding the space altogether.

The most unexpected bonus of this robot vacuum and mop? My nieces were absolutely enthralled by it. They quietly watched it working for an odd amount of time (cleaning and babysitting? What a boon).

What do the experts think about the Ecovacs Deebot T80S Omni?

You can only get your hands on this product from the 9th of April, 2026, so the verdict is still out, but we’ll update as soon as we hear from other experts in the field.

Overall, is the Ecovacs Deebot T80S Omni worth it?

I am naturally frugal, so asking me if I would spend $1799 on a robot vacuum and mop is a tricky question. If I had a large house, with messy kids and pets to contend with, I probably would! The price point is not cheap, but the amount of time you get back when you don’t have to clean your floors is possibly priceless.

Ecovacs products are mid- to high-range, and, considering this, the prices are competitive with other similar brands. They do have budget options, and this model is not one of them (although it’s also not one of the most expensive options, either).

I was truly impressed by the technology, and I believe the vacuum did an exceptional job. I’m not totally comfortable with the amount of information that this robot is storing about my home, and if privacy is a concern for you, robotics is probably not an area you should invest in. But if this product is within your budget and you don’t want to clean your floors, then go for it. This will definitely get the job done for you.
