The armchair sofa bed that turns my home office into a cosy guest room

This hard working piece of furniture has solved my small space dilemma.

Since moving into a new one-bedroom rental with my husband, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect sofa bed. Being from a different state, we regularly have friends and family come to stay but just don’t have the space for a dedicated guest room.

What we do have however, is a hardworking space that functions as our entryway, home office and an occasional guest room. It also happens to be the room that receives the best natural light out of the whole house, making it the perfect space for a cosy reading nook.

I have to admit, I wasn’t aware of the multifunctional genius that is an armchair sofa bed until I started searching for something that could meet both my needs for the space – a cosy armchair to curl up in, and a more permanent guest bed solution than the inflatable mattress we had been subjecting our guests to.

The only trouble was finding the right one – so many of the designs I came across didn’t look comfortable as either a bed or an armchair – defeating the purpose of the multifunctional design. That was until I stumbled across Ecosa’s Sydney 1.5 Seater Sofa Bed in the classic Oyster Shell, which has the traditional silhouette, delightfully oversized frame and soft fabric finish that I was looking for.

What’s so special about the Sydney 1.5 Seater Sofa Bed?

Multifunctional furniture can be hit and miss – sometimes a piece of furniture tries so hard to be two things that it doesn’t end up doing either of them well. Fortunately, this is not the case with Ecosa’s Sydney 1.5 Seater Sofa Bed, which is just as comfortable as a bed as it is an armchair. In fact, I’m enjoying it so much as an armchair that I’m actually dreading the times when I will have to turn it into a bed for guests!

Results from our test

The Ecosa Sydney 1.5 Seater Sofa Bed arrived in four boxes and was a breeze to put together. It’s designed to be assembled without any tools, with the separate parts easily slotting together without much effort. To my delight, the assembly took less than 20 minutes.

However, once it was assembled I realised it wasn’t exactly easy to move to the position that I wanted as the chair legs come out of their slots if you lift them. For this reason, I would recommend building the chair in the place that you want it to stay or putting something under the chair legs so that you can push it without scraping the floor.

Once it was in its new position, I didn’t waste time before trying it out. The oversized quality is so cosy and inviting, and I could have easily have spent the entire day curled up in the chair.

When I tested its functionality as a bed, I was thrilled to find out just how easy it was to fold out into a single bed. I had grown up with the clunkier metal spring style sofa beds of the nineties and early 2000s, which required a fair bit of effort to set up. The Ecosa Sofa Bed on the other hand, felt effortless.

I was also happy to find that the mattress has a supportive firmness while still feeling very plush and comfortable. It’s definitely on the firmer side but this is better for some of our older guests who need more back support. The only thing I would consider is potentially popping a mattress protector on for guests so that the fold in the couch isn’t felt when sleeping.

Overall, is the Ecosa 1.5 seater Sydney sofa worth it?
