Castlery Agnes 3-Seater Sofa Bed

$1,899 at Castlery

Best sofa bed overall

The Castlery Agnes is the sofa bed I’d choose for a living room that needs to do it all. Its plush, feather-filled cushions make it genuinely inviting for everyday lounging, while the memory foam mattress transforms it into a comfortable bed for two when guests stay over. The relaxed silhouette also means it doesn’t look like a sofa bed; a win for style-conscious apartment dwellers and frequent hosts alike.

While I’m not currently in the market for a sofa bed, I did treat myself to a sit on the Agnes Sofa Bed during my last trip to one of Castlery’s physical stores. It’s much comfier than you’d expect from a fold-out sofa, and I can confidently confirm that the design is just as gorgeous in person.

Even better, the design comes in a range of stocked fabrics, so impatient shoppers (like myself) don’t have to wait weeks, or even months, for their guest room centrepiece to arrive. And, if you ask me, this ochre colourway is absolutely divine. In fact, I expect to see it creeping into a lot of design-conscious homes over the next year.

Koala Wanda Sofa Bed (Limited Edition)

$3,290 at Koala

Best for: the perfect green sofa

The Wanda Sofa Bed from Koala’s limited edition Pantone collection is the ultimate upgrade for trend-driven decorators who still want their furniture to stand the test of time. Drenched in the calming shade coined ‘Koala Australia 01,’ this sleek modern sofa bed, boasting extra-soft foam, makes a statement without the threat of becoming ‘dated’ in a few short years. Green is the new neutral, after all.

Recently, having stumbled upon Koala’s Moore Park store (I must have been the last person to know that Koala wasn’t online-only), I had the pleasure of giving the Wanda Sofa Bed a test run, and I was blown away at just how plush such a structured design could be. It’s the kind of sofa bed you’d happily showcase in your living room, rather than merely tucking it away in your spare bedroom. Better yet, it’s in stock now, so you won’t have to wait months to show it off to your guests.

Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed

$2,550 at Eva

Best for: tiny homes and apartments

Measuring in at just 198 cm long and 111 cm deep, and able to pull out to a double bed in seconds, the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed is a Good Design Award Winner that truly earns its keep in smaller homes and tight apartments. We’ve personally tried and tested this model, and it rewrites the whole playbook on the old, chunky sofabeds of seasons past. This model is endlessly sleek and weaves effortlessly in with elevated interiors

“I’ve owned my Eva sofa bed for a year now and it’s a real centrepiece in my home. Perpetually in day bed mode, my family and I enjoy it so much we’ve officially moved dinners to the living room. While it is on the firmer side, the sofa did eventually soften overtime, and I’ve had zero complaints for guests staying over.”
Rachel Weisz, Shopping Writer

For shoppers looking for a sofa bed that won’t undo all their home styling efforts, the Slideaway Sofa Bed is an easy solution. And with an extensive range of colours to choose from, picking one that works with your interior colour palette is refreshingly easy.

Best for: hiding stains, spills, and pet hair

If you’ve read my review of my Sierra Storage Bed and Pure Mattress combo from Ecosa, you already know just how much I adore sleeping on their incredibly comfy pieces, and I’m happy to report that their Nimble Sofa Bed is no exception. Available in an array of moody, on-trend colourways and boasting handy removable covers for easy washing, it’s a dream for superhosts who don’t want to worry about marks.

“Before downsizing to my current home, the Nimble Sofa Bed from Ecosa had been given pride of place in my living room; despite being intended for the guest bedroom, I loved the design so much that it ended up replacing my regular sofa! The dark green fabric hid spills and paw prints from my pup, and multiple guests who came to stay raved about how comfortable it was to sleep on.”
Paris Blanchfield, Shopping Editor

One of my favourite things about this particular sofa bed, however, is how versatile (and easily convertible) it is. The Nimble can be configured as a sofa, king bed, or two singles, making it easy to accommodate any kind, or any number, of guests that might need a place to sleep. And by simply signing up for Ecosa’s newsletter, you can score 20% off at checkout, bringing the price down to under $1,000!

Lounge Lovers Loft Mini 3-Seater Sofa Bed

$2,099 (was $2,999) at Lounge Lovers

Best for: design lovers

If you’re after a sofa bed that doesn’t look like a sofa bed, look no further than the Loft Mini from Lounge Lovers. Plush, elevated, and visually versatile, it’s an all-rounder that looks equally right in a Hamptons-style living room as it does in a modern pad. And with convenient, removable slipcovers for easy cleaning, you can feel safe opting for a lighter tone (like the ready-to-ship Florence Natural colourway, as pictured above).

“I’m coming clean: I have a huge crush on Lounge Lover’s Loft Sofa series. After staying with friends who have a spacious, plush chaise version of the Loft Mini, I spent weeks trying to find a way I could fit one into my tiny apartment to no avail – trust me, the space is small! That being said, if I could choose any sofa bed, regardless of measurements, this is the one I’d be taking home.”

Paris Blanchfield, Shopping Editor

If you’re still a little sceptical of beige sofas, however, Lounge Lovers offers an enticing guarantee offer; for an added cost, you’ll receive a fabric protection kit and five years of coverage against accidental fabric damage and stains – simply call in, and a professional will come to remove the stain for you. If they can’t, they’ll find another solution, like replacing affected cushions or covers!

Living By Design Piloti Breman Sofa Bed

$1,899 at Living By Design

Best for: homes without a spare room

Just because you don’t have a spare room doesn’t mean you can’t offer your guests a comfy place to sleep (without ruining your interiors, of course). The endlessly elevated Piloti Breman Sofa Bed from Living By Design looks so good, you’ll want to keep it on full display. In fact, it’s so comfortable that you’ll likely forget it is a sofa bed – until those unexpected guests start rolling in, of course.

The decadent colourways and durable fabric are great for high-traffic areas of the home too. The darker hues hide marks, and the slipcover design makes washing easy; muddy paws, spills, and the unidentifiable marks we all spend far too much time tackling don’t stand a chance against the Piloti.

Delivery: From $168
Return window: 7 days (store credit, less the cost of return shipping and a 20% restocking fee)
Warranty: 3 years

07

Homary Fold Down 3-Seater Sleeper Sofa

$1,599 (was $1,799) at Homary

Best for: easy cleaning and maintenance

If you’re short on space but still need a spot to host overnight guests, this sleek Sleeper Sofa from Homary is a very clever solution. The fold-down design turns a three-seater into a queen-size sleeping space that only takes up 220 cm x 204 cm floor space. Better yet, the design proves versatile enough to be woven in with most interior styles (such is the appeal of beige sofas); simply add a throw and a couple of cushions, and it looks like a design-first piece, rather than something that’s purely practical.

And while a light-coloured sofa bed may not seem like the smartest choice, there’s nothing to worry about here; the fabric is water-repellent, stain-resistant, and even oil-resistant. Plus, the removable, machine-washable cover will help you keep your guest room looking fresh, even when spills do (unavoidably) occur. Even the mattress cover comes off for cleaning, though this part will need to be taken to the dry cleaners, rather than popped in your washing machine.

Freedom Sorrento Fabric Sofa Bed

$2,249 (was $2,999) at Freedom

Best for: relaxed, coastal interiors

With its low-slung silhouette, oversized cushions and simple timber feet, the Freedom Sorrento has that easy, laid-back look coastal spaces do so well. Its soft, generous proportions make it an inviting spot for everyday lounging, with plenty of room to stretch out. And, having sat on it myself when I last went shopping, I can happily attest that it’s very comfortable too. In fact, I’d even argue it looks better in person, which is a big statement, considering how good it looks online!

When guests stay over, the three-seater (that no one would ever guess could transform into a full-sized bed) converts into a mattress, making it equally as practical as it is good-looking. I’d recommend this design for anyone who wants a sleeper that feels like a proper, comfortable sofa first, particularly in relaxed, neutral interiors where comfort and understated style are key.

09

King Living Orlando Sofa Bed

$2,490 at King Living

Best for: long-term guests

The King Living Orlando proves a sofa bed doesn’t have to feel like a compromise. Its slimline profile, gently curved arms and tailored silhouette keep the footprint feeling neat, making it a smart choice for apartments, home offices or guest rooms where space is at a premium. It’s polished enough to work as an everyday sofa, too, so you won’t feel like you’re sacrificing style just because you need a spare bed.

The real draw is what’s inside. It comes with King Living’s Sleep+ 1600 Mattress, designed with high-resilience foam for a more supportive and comfortable night’s sleep. The Italian-designed mechanism also opens in one smooth motion, without needing to remove the cushions; a small but very welcome detail if you’re regularly switching between sofa and bed mode. I’d especially recommend it to frequent hosts who want their guests to sleep well without dedicating an entire room to a guest bed.

Delivery: From $390 (or free pickup)

Warranty: 25 years on frame, 3 years manufacturer’s

10

James Lane Harry Tribute Walnut Sofa Bed

$2,499 at James Lane

The James Lane Harry Tribute is a sofa bed for anyone who doesn’t want to compromise on style. Its classic three-seater silhouette and warm walnut detailing give it a more traditional, furniture-piece feel, making it easy to work into an established living room rather than relegating it to the spare room.

When guests arrive, it transforms into a practical sleeping space without taking away from its good looks during the day. I’d pick this for classic or mid-century-inspired homes, particularly if you’re after a sleeper that feels considered and substantial rather than overly modern or utilitarian.

11

Temple & Webster Softy Premium Chaise Sofa Bed

$2,499 (was $2,999) at Temple & Webster

If you have the room to fill, the Temple & Webster Softy makes a convincing case for going big. This generous five-seater corner sofa gives everyone plenty of space to stretch out, while its soft-to-medium cushioning and deep, relaxed proportions make it an inviting everyday lounge.

And when guests stay, it pulls out into a queen-size bed, so you’re not sacrificing sleeping space for a larger sofa. The removable slipcover is another practical touch, while the choice of left- or right-hand corner configurations makes it easier to work into a spacious living room. I’d pick it for families, frequent hosts or anyone who wants their sofa to be the main event.

I, myself, was sceptical of investing in a sofa from Temple & Webster without being able to test it out in-person, but having just added their 2-seater Montauk sofa to my living room, I can personally attest that the quality is surprisingly good!

3 expert tips for successful sofa bed shopping

Before running to checkout with your chosen sofa bed, there are a few things you should know, and I’ve enlisted the help of Amy Bradney George, Home Beautiful’s Deals and Shopping Writer, to share her expert tips.

  • 1. Prioritise deep seats:
According to Amy, the space-saving perks of a shallow seat don’t always justify the cost, as she came to find out after taking home a fold-out sofa bed:
  • “It’s comfortable as a bed, but it does prove a bit short,” Amy explains. “As a result, it tends to start sliding out when it’s sat on as a sofa by anyone larger than a teenager. When I’m looking at fold-out sofa beds, I now look for designs with deeper seats, and that are also longer when pulled out as a bed. This makes them more likely to stay in the intended form.”

  • 2. Check for lumps, gaps, and bumps:
“Most sofa bed mattresses have folds or separate sections, which can be uncomfortable for couples or even solo sleepers,” says Amy. “I’m always impressed by designs that address this, like the Koala Wanda Sofa Bed, which has gap fillers and a mattress topper for a seamless sleep surface, or the Nimble Sofa Bed from Ecosa, which has sections that zip together to avoid gaps.”

  • 3. Opt for easy assembly and reconfiguration:
Anyone who owns flat-pack furniture knows how tricky assembly can be, and sofa beds come with a few added complications. “I put my sofa bed together on my own, and it was much harder than I expected,” Amy admits. “Thankfully it is easy to convert between sofa and bed. But now that I’m looking for a new one, I’m leaning towards simple and tool-free designs like the Eva Slideaway, Koala Wanda and King Living Orlando Sofa Bed.

How to choose the right sofa bed for your home

While design will always be a driving force behind our decision-making, there are a few other practical aspects worth thinking of when buying a sofa bed. Key considerations for prospective buyers are which room the sofa bed will be located in, who will be using it, and even the time of day it will be used.

“Will it mainly be used as a sofa with the bed used infrequently? Or will the bed be set up more regularly? If it’s the latter, and especially if the bed will be used by adults, focus on the comfiest bed rather than the most stylish sofa to ensure your guests enjoy a great night’s sleep.”

James Whitta, VP of product design, Koala

Perhaps the sofa bed will be located in the rumpus room, for example, where, by day, it will be primarily used as a sofa for kids or teens. If so, durability and stain-resistance (or washable covers) should be high on the priority list – after all, if children are about, spilled drinks and ninja kicks are never too far away. If the bed is likely to be used by someone with mobility issues, it should be roomy, supportive and high enough to easily get in and out of – you don’t want your guests feeling cramped, sleep-deprived or, worse still, waking up with aches and pains.

And remember, the bed should also be simple to set up and pack away for you!

How to choose the right size

When I was picking out a sofa for my tiny apartment, I ended up creating visual representations of how big different designs would be using masking tape. This was a great way to get a clear idea of which sofas (or in this case, sofa beds) fit well, and which would end up cramping the space.

Koala’s James Whitta also encourages shoppers to “Consider the scale of the furniture within the space and whether the piece you’re looking at will accommodate one or more people.” He then goes on to advise, “Think about all options for placement, orientation and its storage capabilities and, crucially, consider the footprint of the bed when it’s fully extended. If you’re choosing a sofa bed, check the dimensions so you know exactly how much room both the sofa and the bed will occupy.”

Frequently asked questions:

How important is easy sofa-to-bed configuration?

Very important, especially if you’re going to be using your sofa bed often. Look for a piece that transforms easily in one or two simple movements, and disappears just as simply; you don’t want to be wrangling a difficult contraption or having to seek out extra helping hands or a brains trust.

If children are involved, it’s also important to choose a mechanism that is safe for adventurous little fingers. “I recommend low-tech, bi-fold formats because they deliver the easiest set-ups,” says James Whitta. “That way you don’t have to fuss with buttons, levers, or hinges.”

How much should a sofa bed cost?

Sofa beds can range from $500 for very low-end models to upwards of $2,000 for designer pieces. It’s important to work out what you’re willing to spend before you start shopping (and fall in love with something you can’t afford).

Think about how often the bed will be used and the genuine comfort requirements of its primary users. These factors will help determine a ballpark figure you’re prepared to spend. Naturally, you’ll pay more for construction longevity, premium fabric and bespoke size customisation.

How to keep your sofa bed clean

Prevention is key, so removable, washable slipcovers and stain-resistant fabrics are well worth considering. Microfibre, wool and leather are all sensible choices.

Styling your sofa bed

So you’ve found your guest bed. Well done! What’s next? Add fresh, natural linen and pillows in both low and high profiles. Extra cushions, a mattress protector, a lamp and a side table will also ensure your guests feel welcome. A night light in the hall is also always appreciated, as is a carafe of water and glasses next to the bed.

Home Beautiful’s styling tips:

  • Style the bedside table with a jug of water and a floral arrangement
  • Create space to unpack or spread a blanket at the foot of the bed for five-star polish and to save your linen from soiled suitcases
  • Add cloud-like comfort with a mattress topper or luxury bedding
  • Freshen up the room by throwing open the curtains by day and lighting a scented candle
  • Check linen supplies, including towels, pillows, and blankets
