We have fallen in love with the new rug collection released by Block powerhouse couple, Steph and Gian, featuring textural layers and an elegant and restrained palette. Winners of The Block in 2023, the married couple (and now new parents) have expanded their popular Japandi Estate range.

The stylish duo has released a lush collection of rugs with wholesaler Unitex, as part of their label. Featuring a soft selection of pared-back neutrals, the collection is the perfect base for that mix of Scandinavian and Japanese design styles that Steph and Gian are known for.

Available at Temple & Webster, the collection includes generously sized rugs for living and bedroom spaces, along with matching hall runners, which will allow rooms to connect aesthetically for a cohesive interior.

“Rugs have always been one of my go-to pieces to ground a room and bring that sense of connection,” explains Steph.

“I have the privilege of working with so many people through architectural and interior design consulting, and a common thread is always the search for spaces that feel consistent, calm, and peaceful – which resonates with my passion for timeless and cohesive spaces.”

“When Andrea from Unitex approached us, it felt like the perfect moment. Gian and I set out to create a Japandi-inspired rug collection that could move seamlessly from one room to the next, giving a home unity without sameness.”

The new collection shows how Steph’s architectural eye for clean lines and calming spaces matches beautifully with Gian’s focus on value and liveability.

As the blending of two design philosophies, Japandi provides both beauty and function, Steph says.

“The minimalism of Japanese design teaches us about restraint (not over-cluttering), balance (not over-doing), and the quiet power of simplicity (being subtle and simple, yet effective), while Scandinavian design brings in warmth, tactility, and a deep respect for natural and earthy materials,” she says.

“Across our rug collection, this comes through in the use of subtle patterns that add gentle rhythm without overwhelming a room, and through a careful choice of fibres and textures it gives a nice and grounding feel underfoot. The designs are understated, but the detail lies in how they’re woven – pared back enough to create calm, yet rich enough in materiality to bring comfort and depth into any space.”

While the collection does feature the couple’s distinctive neutral palette, it reflects a move towards warmer tones. Steph says the textural layers and mix of tones helps to ground spaces and provide a base on which to create a warm and welcoming interior.

“Within this rug collection, we wanted to move beyond the idea of ‘just beige’ and explore a wide spectrum of colours, such as rich walnuts and peppery charcoal to soft husks and warm wheats,” she says.

“We thought that by layering these shades together (which we’ve done through a number of the pieces), we created a palette that feels calm and timeless, but also rich and grounding.”

“The textures and patterns were chosen with real life in mind, we wanted to make them soft and welcoming underfoot, while also bringing in colours and patterns that would allow people to use them as a styling item that are consistent with other pieces of furniture in their spaces/homes.”

Our tip?

Buy a non-slip rug mat in the corresponding size to help secure the rugs to the floor (especially for timber and tiled floors) for both safety and to extend the life of the rug.
