There’s something about the first warm days of spring that makes us want to fling open the windows and start afresh. As the garden wakes up, the days grow longer and heavy winter layers are packed away, our interiors can benefit from a seasonal reset, too. The good news? Giving your home a fresh look for spring doesn’t require an expensive renovation or complete decorating overhaul. A few clever changes to colour, texture, light and styling can transform how a room feels – and many can be tackled in a single weekend.

Interior stylist Heather Nette King knows the power of a seasonal refresh. Here are some of the easiest ways to welcome spring into your home.

1. Start with a spring clean and declutter

Before bringing anything new into your home, take stock of what’s already there. A spring home refresh is the perfect excuse to clear surfaces, tackle neglected cupboards and remove the little pockets of clutter that inevitably accumulate over winter. Rather than trying to clean the entire house in a day, work room by room. Wash windows, dust overlooked surfaces, clean upholstery and move furniture to reach those spots that rarely see the vacuum.

It’s also worth editing your decor as you go. Store away anything that feels particularly heavy, dark or wintry and leave a little breathing room on shelves, coffee tables and consoles.

2. Let in more natural light

Longer days are one of the great pleasures of spring, so make the most of them. Start by cleaning windows inside and out, then consider whether heavy window treatments are unnecessarily blocking daylight. Sheer curtains can soften a room while still allowing beautiful filtered light to enter, particularly in living rooms and bedrooms.

Where privacy, heat or glare is an issue, layered window treatments give you greater control throughout the day. Pairing sheers with blinds or heavier curtains allows you to embrace the sunshine when you want it without sacrificing comfort.

Even repositioning furniture that blocks a window can make a surprising difference to how bright and spacious a room feels.

3. Swap heavy winter textiles for lighter layers

Just as we change our wardrobes with the seasons, our homes can benefit from a textile switch-up. Pack away chunky throws, heavy blankets and overly plush cushions and introduce breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton instead. You don’t need to replace everything for a spring home refresh: simply changing a few cushion covers or the throw at the end of your bed can shift the mood of an entire room.

In the bedroom, lighter bed linen instantly creates that breezy, relaxed feeling synonymous with warmer weather. Crisp white always works, but soft greens, buttery yellows, dusty pinks and delicate patterns can bring a subtle sense of spring.

4. Bring spring colours indoors

A spring home refresh doesn’t have to mean covering your home in pastels. Look outside for a palette that feels right for your space. Soft eucalyptus and sage greens, warm neutrals, pale pink, sky blue and sun-washed yellow all reference the season without feeling overly themed.

If your home has a largely neutral palette, accessories are an easy place to experiment. A colourful cushion, patterned lampshade, piece of art or ceramic vase can be enough to breathe new life into a familiar room. The secret is restraint. Rather than introducing five new colours at once, choose one or two shades that complement your existing interiors and repeat them in small moments throughout the space.

5. Refresh your home with rugs and natural texture

Texture can completely change the mood of a room, particularly when you swap heavier winter materials for relaxed natural fibres.

“Jute, being a natural fibre, is a brilliant way to bring an earthy texture into any room,” says Heather.

A jute or woven rug can create an easy, laid-back foundation for spring and summer, while baskets, linen, timber, rattan and ceramics bring another layer of warmth and tactility. You can also use rugs to introduce colour or pattern without committing to a permanent change. If you already have carpet, layering a contrasting rug over the top can help define a living zone while adding extra interest.

6. Bring the garden inside

Few things say spring quite like the return of flowers, and fresh greenery is one of the quickest ways to make a room feel alive again.

You don’t need an elaborate florist arrangement for a spring home refresh. A few branches clipped from the garden can look spectacular in an oversized vase, while small posies picked from different corners of the garden have an effortless charm.

Indoor plants also come into their own at this time of year. Giving existing plants a little attention by removing dead leaves, wiping away dust and checking whether they need repotting or feeding. Then think beyond obvious places. A small vase beside the bed, a trailing plant on a bathroom shelf or pot of herbs in the kitchen can bring a welcome hit of green to hardworking spaces.

7. Restyle the surface you see everyday

Sometimes a home doesn’t need anything new – it simply needs to be looked at differently.

Clear your coffee table, bedside table or console and rebuild the arrangement using pieces you already own. Move a lamp from one room to another, rotate artwork, bring a favourite book out of the cupboard or relocate a vase that has sat in the same spot for years. Aim for a mixture of heights, shapes and textures rather than filling every available centimetre. Leaving some negative space will make treasured objects stand out and can help the entire room feel calmer.

Finally, open the windows, let the breeze through and add something beautiful from outside.

Spring’s greatest decorating lesson might also be its simplest: sometimes a fresh start is all your home needs.
