Surprise! How Alisa and Lysandra Fraser transformed their mum’s kitchen with Kaboodle

The Block alumni used an overseas trip and eight weeks to give their parents' unit a makeover, starting with the heart of the home.

When The Block alumni Alisa and Lysandra Fraser announced a new project to their followers, they said it was special to them. The twins were giving their parents’ unit a surprise makeover while the couple were overseas. The reason was personal. The sisters say their mum raised them largely on her own, and the kitchen renovation was their way of saying thank you. Their parents were ready to sell and downsize, which made a fresh renovation a smart move as well as a sentimental one. They had about eight weeks to finish before the couple came home.

Where it started: dark, dated and closed in

The first room they tackled was the kitchen, which they called the heart of the home. The unit was spacious but gloomy. The kitchen was enclosed, the finishes were dated, and a floral blind became a running joke between the sisters.

The plan: more light, same layout

The biggest structural change was removing the wall between the kitchen and living area, which let light flow through and opened the whole space. They kept the kitchen’s footprint, because the existing layout already worked well, and spent their budget on finishes instead.

The look is soft, light and scandi-inspired. The same materials and tones run through the home to keep it cohesive.

The cabinetry: Kaboodle Kitchens

The kitchen is built with Kaboodle, the flat-pack cabinetry sold through Bunnings. The sisters say it allowed them to transform the space at an affordable price without sacrificing style, and the finished room backs that up.

They chose Kaboodle’s silk finish doors in Macaroon, a soft warm white, in the Alpine profile. An open shelf in Honeywood adds a timber-look accent. Soft-close hinges and runners are used throughout, along with wireware storage for easy access and an integrated dishwasher for a seamless look. The same Macaroon cabinetry runs through the laundry and bedroom.

The stone: CDK Stone’s Aella Arabescato Dolomite

For a timeless stone to lift the kitchen, the sisters chose Aella Arabescato Dolomite from CDK Stone. They love its soft, subtle veining, which adds movement to the white cabinetry without competing with it.

The tapware: Reece Mizu Drift in brushed brass

The sisters say they’re all about tapware shine. A brushed brass Mizu Drift tap from Reece sits against the white sink and light stone, an elegant and sophisticated accent that is the main touch of metal in the room.

The appliances: Bosch

The sisters are big fans of Bosch. They praise the dishwasher for being quiet and leaving everything spotless, say the oven cooks perfectly every time, and say the induction cooktop makes cooking and cleaning easy. It replaced the old freestanding cooker. The laundry also has a Bosch washer and dryer.

The flooring: Godfrey Hirst Autumn Amber

The sisters wanted warm, inviting flooring that adds depth without darkening the space. They chose Godfrey Hirst’s Autumn Amber timber flooring, which gives the kitchen and living area a cosy, elegant feel.

The window dressing: Luxaflex plantation shutters

The floral blind is gone, replaced by Luxaflex plantation shutters. The sisters call them a timeless and practical solution, offering privacy and light control while making the space feel complete.

The rest of the unit

The kitchen sits within a wider renovation. The living and dining area is now open plan, with wall moulding and furniture from Castlery and RJ Living, plus oversized pendant lighting from Beacon. The old bathroom and separate toilet were combined into one large room with a built-in bath, and the main bedroom gained panelling, new lighting and a built-in wardrobe. The laundry has finger tiles from Beaumont Tiles.
