3 ways to flood your home with natural light

How to design for small space living with a family

Plan ahead to incorporate as much natural light as possible into your home’s design.

No matter how you size it up, the House Rules auction house was a petite space for a family. The teams tackled the challenges of small space living by managing to keep the design simple, elegant and cohesive, bringing natural light into what could have been a dark and dingy space.

“I just think in a small house natural light is absolutely imperative,” says judge Wendy Moore. “So, if you can get a lightwell, particularly over a kitchen, it just instantly makes the whole room feel light and airy.”

Here are three tips from the show that we can all use in our own homes.

Skylights wherever possible

Skylights are surprisingly affordable, both to purchase and to install. Bringing natural light into wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms also has the bonus effect of preventing the build-up of mould and mildew. Consider choosing a skylight that opens if you need additional ventilation – they are even available with automatic systems if your ceiling is particularly high.

A central lightwell

Staircases are the ideal way to bring light into a room. Look at light-coloured balustrades, floating steps or glass panelling to make sure that they aren’t too heavy and allow light to travel through the structure.

Glass sliding doors

It’s ideal to have a strong connection between inside and out – usually with sliding doors that open out from a living or kitchen space to the outdoors area. Indeed, it’s a great way to double your entertaining space. Sliding doors can almost disappear in wall cavities when required, which opens up the space even more. Go for the largest panels of glass you can afford – you won’t regret it.
