Sitting room: raw appeal
The past and the present come together in this beautiful Sydney home. An exposed brick chimney breast sets the tonal theme to this space with an antique dowry chest shipped from India sitting atop a cowhide. A classic Jardan sofa provides instant comfort, while two original Parker Knoll chairs that belonged to the grandmother of homeowner and interior designer Alex Bogle, add a vintage charm. Homeowner Alex designed the kitchen space, built by Art Of Kitchens, so she could “stand here and command everybody,” she says. “This is the helm of the house!” Beneath a custom-made Zumtobel light, a large Caesarstone-topped bench in Organic White provides plenty of secret spots for storage and a child-friendly eating spaces.
Soulful hues mix with raw textures in the dining room, with a family treasure – homeowner Charlie’s mother’s old kitchen table from Scotland – remaining the focal point alongside replica Thonet chairs.

Poppies provide the perfect match for the warm tones of the home.
Lovely well-made toys give this children’s room instant character. The homeowner Alex opted for meaningful pieces over disposable toys.
The homeowner’s main bedroom continues the charm offensive, with character pieces including an inherited upholstered chair and a throw from India.
A cosy nook in the new part of the home has been transformed into a cool upstairs bed thanks to a custom-made mattress from a specialty boat store designed to fit the unique space. Side-by-side Ikea desks with matching stools from Dungog Country Antiques provide a homework space for the two children who sleep here.
Glass horizontal tiles in blue are a rare cool colour splash in the home and provide a contemporary touch.
A family-sized Cotswold Furniture outdoor table is a much-used landing spot for this family. The sandstone paved courtyard is connected to a beautiful vegetable garden that provides a bounty for the family in spring.
