6 excuses not to leave the house this weekend

Staying in is the new going out.

Between social commitments, kids’ sports and family catch-ups, it’s not unusual to spend more of our weekends outside than inside. But while a full calendar can be fun, sometimes a weekend at home is what’s really needed.

For those who find the prospect of staying in rather daunting, rest assured that a weekend at home doesn’t necessarily mean a weekend without plans. Whether it’s pottering in the garden, tackling your to-do list or simply flopping onto the sofa with a good book, there are plenty of ways to make the most of a weekend at home.

1. Spend some time in the garden

Spring is a great time to get into the garden. Check for bugs on all your plants, give everything a good feed with slow release fertiliser and do a good mulch and tidy. Even if you’re not an avid gardener, take advantage of bursts of sunshine to stroll around your outdoors or balcony to check on existing plants and get inspired for the warm weather to come.

Give your indoor plants a spa treatment by gathering together all of your green friends in the shower for a soak and pamper session. Paint your toenails, then share the love by giving leaves a wipe with a clean cloth dampened with a solution of diluted full-fat milk to bring a lovely natural shine and ward off dust, giving their surface area a boost to breathe uninhibited.

Since it’s proven to be good for your mental health, commit to baking up a storm using one or two of those recipes you’ve had earmarked for ages. Bake your own bread or, better still, pretend you’re attending a lunch or party and bake a cake or sweet dish to impress – then stay home and enjoy the spoils yourself!

There’s nothing more satisfying than giving your home a good deep clean. Whether its tackling your wardrobe, the kids’ rooms or the dreaded linen cupboard, your future self is going to thank you for your efforts.

Plus, if you don’t have any plans booked in, you can take your time with the cleaning and actually enjoy the process (it’s possible, we promise).

Just remember to reward yourself with a cocktail (or two) afterwards.

Whether your school lunchboxes are starting to look a little thin on nutrition or your dinners are lacking inspiration, prepare for the week ahead with a couple of power hours in the kitchen this weekend.

Start by making yourself a cup of tea and spend a few hours leafing through those recipe books and bookmarked recipes. Once you’re feeling inspired, save yourself the stress of the supermarket and order everything online instead.

Whether it’s as simple as swapping your couch and the TV cabinet or creating an entirely new space (like a reading nook), feel free to be experimental with your space — and remember, nothing’s permanent!

Maybe you have already decluttered your house — but what about your mind? Mental clutter can be just as draining and anxiety-inducing as physical clutter, and having a life admin day is a great way to get on top of all those annoying mental lists that have been hanging over you.

Whether it’s sorting through bills, sending birthday cards, actually making those appointments or something more exciting like booking a holiday, pop the kettle on and dedicate a day to sorting out all of life’s little to-dos. We promise you will feel all the better for it.
