Charlotte, a seven-year-old designer at heart and local to the Springvale IKEA store, was apparently so uninspired by the large IKEA logo flags flown outside that she took matters into her own hands, writing a letter to IKEA Australia CEO Jan Gardberg.

“Dear IKEA boss, can you please change the boring old flags near the road in Springvale to these pictures,” wrote Charlotte and included some drawings of her concept for the Swedish retail giant to change up the “boring” logo design. Not only did IKEA take her creative ideas on board, they’re celebrating with a national day tomorrow in honour of the new flag.

With a history of thinking outside the home furnishing flatpack by working with children to develop IKEA’s products and ideas, it’s not surprising that Charlotte’s letter found it’s way to  Julian, IKEA Springvale Store Manager who wrote back to Charlotte, mentioning that “We think you are right, they are a bit boring.”

“…we actually really love unicorns too, and we loved your idea so much we’ve decided to make a whole day out of it and celebrate Unicorn Day with the new flag.”

Charlotte and her dad Matthew, who agreed the change was “A Very Good Idea” met with Julian at the Springvale, Victoria store to make plans.

Charlotte’s designs have been created into a new IKEA flag, which will be launched and raised on National Unicorn Day 2019 tomorrow (Tuesday 9th April) at IKEA Springvale and for two weeks, says Matthew on social media, “it will fly proudly in front of Springvale IKEA, providing relief from boredom to thousands of people passing by.”

Following a flag raising at 10:45am there will be fun school holiday activities including face painting and food.
