What is a good thread count for sheets?
It sounds counter-intuitive, but for thread count (TC), think less about numbers and focus more on how you want your bedding to feel. “Lower thread counts are lighter and more breathable, which makes them great for warm weather or if you tend to sleep hot,” says Abdul Nathani, product manager at Freedom. “You see this a lot in percale weaves, which give you that crisp, airy feeling.” For this category, look for a 250 TC or lower.
Mid-range bedding between 300 and 500 TC offers a good mix of softness and durability, providing a comfortable sleeping experience at a reasonable price. “Sateen weaves are a good example here – they feel smoother and slightly more luxurious, while still being easy to live with year-round,” says Abdul.
At the higher end – bedding above 600 TC – fabric is made with finer yarns or a multi-ply construction and tends to feel heavier, which is ideal for winter or those who are sensitive to the cold. Look beyond the number, however, to the feel and your own sleeping temperature for the best path forward.
Bedding with a higher TC often comes at a higher price, but does TC indicate best quality bed sheets? Not necessarily. Claims of TC beyond 900 are frequently a misleading marketing ploy, as there is a physical limit to how many quality threads can be packed into one square inch. Also, watch out for ‘ply-inflation’, where a manufacturer uses the ply count to falsely increase the TC rate. For example, 300 TC two-ply fabric can be marketed as 600 TC, even though it isn’t woven any more tightly than a 300 TC single-ply fabric.
The most overlooked detail when buying fitted sheets
When buying a fitted sheet, many people overlook the corner depth. “This is one of those things people don’t think about… until it starts annoying them every night,” shares Abdul Nathani, product manager at Freedom. “Mattresses have gotten deeper over the years.” To avoid a fitted sheet that constantly rides up or slips off, measure your mattress from bottom seam to top, including the topper, then add at least 5cm for the ideal sheet pocket depth.
What you need to know before buying your next sheet set
With proper care, quality sheets can last 2 to 5 years. Thinning fabric, pilling or loss of softness are signs it’s time to upgrade.
This is the number of vertical and horizontal threads woven into an area of fabric – but this area can vary by country and manufacturer. A higher thread count (TC) indicates a denser weave, but it’s not a standalone measure of quality.
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures fabric weight, commonly used for linen and flannel.
For linen, 170 to 190 GSM is a great all-rounder. Flannel sheets are typically 160 GSM and up for warmth.
This refers to how many strands are twisted together to form one thread. Single-ply means a thread is made from a singular strand, while multi-ply consists of two or more strands twisted together. The finished, spun strand is usually referred to as yarn.
Weave is the pattern in which threads are interlaced to make fabric, which affects its feel, look and breathability. Two sheets with the same thread count can feel and perform differently due to their weave. Common weaves include percale, sateen and twill.
Breathable fibres like cotton percale, bamboo and linen help regulate temperature and wick moisture.
Organic cotton or bamboo sheets are often gentler on sensitive skin due to fewer chemicals in production.
