English comedian and television personality, Alan Carr seems to have grown accustomed to castle life. After spending the last summer at the 19th Century Ardross Castle while filming The Traitors UK, Carr has now purchased a castle of his own.
“Some men when they have a midlife crisis buy a Lamborghini or grow a ponytail, but me – I want my very own castle,” Carr said in a press statement.
“Since I was a boy in Northampton, I’ve always dreamt big, and have always been enchanted with the history and romance of a stately home and as I turn 50, I feel it’s my time.
“All I want is a turret to call my own – get me over that drawbridge.”
His new castle is a Baronial-style castle in The Scottish Borders known as Ayton Castle. It was designed by Scotland’s leading Gothic revival architect of the early 19th century, James Gillespie Graham, and features 17 bedrooms, six bathrooms, multiple formal reception rooms, an inner hall, private chapel and a five-storey Great Tower. The castle sits on 160 acres of land, with its own woodlands, formal gardens and 10 ¼-inch gauge railway.
The castle came to market with an asking price of £3.25 million (AUD $6.1 million) but we don’t know the exact price Carr paid yet. Carr’s journey into purchasing and running the castle will all be filmed for a new Disney+ program titled Castle Man.
