Beyond the moodboard: turning inspiration into reality

If you are looking to build a new home, it’s not hard to find inspiration for the design. It can be found in many places – from retail shops to your social media feed, friends’ homes and, of course, pages of interior magazines such as Home Beautiful.

But how do you take these inspirational images, work out what suits you and your family, and turn them into a practical how-to guide?

Lisa Goodsall, National Display Home and Studio M Retail Manager at Metricon, says that modern homeowners can find inspiration everywhere, but putting them into practice is harder.

“One of the biggest challenges our customers have is not a lack of inspiration, it is knowing how to turn countless individual ideas into one cohesive home.”

“It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the information out there,” says Lisa. “We like to cut through that overwhelm by showing complete, professionally curated styles in real Metricon homes.”

“It gives customers the confidence to understand what works together, make informed choices and create a home that feels considered, connected and uniquely theirs.”

Why a lookbook?

The key to a stylish home, Lisa says, is careful curation of what’s happening in the market and separating those trends into styles that homeowners can adapt or adopt – while avoiding the overwhelm.

“Building or styling a home involves hundreds of decisions,” she says. “Our online Lookbook gives people a clear, inspiring place to begin, showing how colours, materials, textures and furnishings can come together to create a cohesive home.”

“We created the Lookbook to make professional interior design inspiration more accessible and help Australians discover a style that genuinely feels like them.”

Philosophy behind the styles

The key to creating a home that feels stylish, yet effortless, is knowing how your family lives and what works for you. Start by collecting all your favourite images of furniture, fixtures and accessories and see what style starts to emerge.

“Our philosophy is that great style should feel personal, liveable and enduring,” says Lisa. “From the calm simplicity of Japandi to the relaxed warmth of Palm Springs or the elegance of French Provincial, there is no single definition of a beautiful home.”

Thorough research is important – after all, building your new home is probably the biggest expense you will ever have. Metricon’s Lookbook draws on multiple sources as research, including magazines, international design shows, and feedback from real customers through their design team and display centres.

“Our design team has a deep understanding of how Australians live, together with emerging local and international design trends and insights gathered through our display homes and Studio M selection centres,” explains Lisa.

“We also consider the colours, materials and finishes gaining momentum, but carefully interpret them in ways that are practical, achievable and suited to Australian homes.”

Using the Lookbook

“Customers use the Lookbook as both a source of inspiration and a practical decision-making tool,” says Lisa, explaining that customers might explore different styles, save ideas and identify the colours, finishes and details they are naturally drawn to.

“It helps them articulate their vision and approach the design process with greater clarity and confidence,” she says.

Lisa explains that they are seeing strong demand for bold, confident styles, with Modern Contemporary emerging as a standout for its sculptural forms, grounded natural materials and clean architectural lines. Other popular designs include Japandi and French Provincial, while the ever-enduring Hamptons aesthetic is still a fond favourite.

Keeping it timeless

Trends change and evolve over time, so it is important to continually refresh your design plans up until the time you start your build. As a curated digital design experience, Lisa says the Lookbook is a living design resource rather than a static snapshot of one moment in time.

She suggests going back and re-evaluating your design as time goes on and you become more confident in your choices.

“We refresh styles, palettes and interpretations throughout the year, introducing emerging ideas while retaining the timeless foundations that give a home longevity,” she adds.
