We don’t blame The Block contestants if they’re feeling a little misguided in main ensuite week. At the start of the season they were told by Darren Palmer to do a “white, light and bright house” like Kim Kardashian’s. But now, the brief has been switched, with Darren backtracking on this vision.
The judge met with the teams to tell them they want colour now. He even went so far as to show them pictures of rooms with colour drenching as examples. What in the Scotty Cam is going on? That’s like the client changing the brief on a designer when a renovation is three rooms in.
It did seem to come a little too late in the game, with the teams failing to switch it up and week four main ensuites showing more of the same – swathes of neutrals and a lot of vanilla. One team, Lisa and Rosco, took a risk with crazy-pave tiles, yet they were told by the judges that they looked too faux. Their scores reflected this and the pair pulled in last.
Meanwhile, Rick and Tayla took out their first win, with the help of a bonus point, despite their taps being so close to the basins they were basically unusable. Yet they did include a splash of colour in their artwork, so perhaps we’ll see the beige ships steer towards brighter shores in future.

Winners: Rick and Tayla
Their score: 26/30 🥇
It was a winning week for the underdogs and Tayla seemed to have done something right this week. “This is the best room Rick and Tayla have done,” said Shaynna. “Sometimes the people who look like they’re struggling at the beginning win The Block.”
The judges were impressed with their selections, particularly the tiles, which were Marty’s favourite of the reveals. Darren liked them too. “This looks so much like a natural stone,” he noted.
Although there were some misses such as the artwork being “too generic” for Marty. The vanity also needs to be lowered to allow more space between the taps and the basins – something Rick said they would fix.

The large shower with double shower heads is perfect for a main ensuite and the use of the same large format tiles across the floors and walls.

Although we like the inclusion of colour, this artwork feels a little misplaced in this room.

Second: Chantel and Wyatt
Their score: 25.5/30 🥈
One team who made no attempt to move away from the light and bright brief was Chantel and Wyatt who delivered another elegantly vanilla space. “It’s elegant, it feels calm,” Darren observed.
The pair are lucky to have the Cursio brothers tiling for them, which helps them complete with ease each week. “It looks like they finished it with military precision, it is spotless,” noted Marty.
While Shaynna had a criticism related to their consistency. “It’s so marketable but it’s really predictable,” Shaynna said. It makes one wonder if the judges want to see homes that are marketable or that make for good TV, as it appears the two are difficult to combine.

The fact they’re staying true to their style despite a changing brief. The champagne coloured taps were elegant and we like that they didn’t do cabinets under the mirrors.

The brown towels feel a bit less chic, but other than that it feels like a minimalist Kim Kardashian mansion in Mount Eliza.

Their score: 25/30 🥉
These two had their hopes on the love seat impressing this week but it fell flat with the judges. It was a hard no from Darren, and Shaynna thought it looked like it belonged in a sauna.
Overall, the room was received well. “The tactility is yummy,” said Darren. Marty added that “it feels expensive” – which it was. This duo is raising concerns over their spending and whether their budget will last to the end of the series.

The tactile wall finish is lovely and towel choice more aligned to the room.
Details we’d change…
The love seat seems to take up a lot of space without adding a whole lot of appeal to the room.

Fourth: Adam and Jolene
Their score: 21/30
It was a case of not having the right tilers letting these two down this week. They had help from the Cursio brothers at the end but unfortunately time got the better of them. What Adam and Jolene did reveal went down well – and they were the only couple to introduce colour in any meaningful way, with stunning sage green finger tiles and basins.
The layout with a freestanding bath in a wet area was also a hit. “I find this layout so thoroughly satisfying,” said Darren. If only they had finished, they may have won. “If they did finish it could be the contender for the day,” said Shaynna

The green finger tiles and basins are a great change from beige and there are some nice styling choices.

The tiles near the bath are not our favourite, but we like that they’re trying different things.

Fifth: Lisa and Rosco
Their score: 20.5/30
It was sad to see Lisa and Rosco try something different in the faux crazy-pave floor tiles and it fall flat. Yet faux anything never usually goes down too well on The Block. “This tile, I’m just not a fan of at all. I don’t like it,” said Marty.
The consensus was that there were too many competing materials, making the room feel busy rather than beautiful. Those wall sconces are divine but because there’s so much going on you hardly notice them, said Shaynna.
At least they have a distinct point of view and are trying different things… albeit beige things.
Details we love…
The creamy coloured basins and timber joinery on the vanity brings a lovely warmth to the space, while the arched entry to the shower is inviting.
Details we’d change…
We don’t want to agree with the judges but the floor tiles aren’t quite right. An authentic crazy pave would have been much better.
