Sadly, Rick was out of action this week as he was in hospital with a severe leg infection. His daughter Tayla was left to her own devices to create their guest suite, which you’d think might be her time to shine, but it didn’t turn out that way.
There were plants under tables, a mish-mash of styles and a giant mirror stuck up against the curtains. To be honest, it was a complete mess. The judges couldn’t contain themselves at the sight of the decorating disaster, with Shaynna dissolving into fits of giggles.
Here were Tayla’s five key mistakes… and what the other teams got it right.
Mistake 1: Pot plants don’t go on the floor (or under a desk)
Plants bring life to a space, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Unfortunately, Tayla got it wrong, even after being told week after week not to stick a pot plant in the corner. Once again, she had a pot plant in a corner and under the desk. A double no-no.
Who got it right: Courtney and Sev
It was another tasteful week for winners Courtney and Sev. They got a lot right, including their touches of botanicals. The key is to style foliage so it blends seamlessly and naturally, rather than feeling forced and like an afterthought.
Mistake 2: The mural was overbearing
Unfortunately, this mural and bed combination was a major miss. There was no bedhead and the bedding was so tightly tucked, it was overwhelmed by the busy green wall.
Who got it right: Adam and Jolene
These two go from strength to strength as they find their style, and the balance of the feature wall against the bedhead with built-in side tables was beautifully done. It was a harmonious success!
Mistake 3: A car crash of clashing styles
A bit of Mediterranean here, contemporary there, a touch of organic and a random barn-style door – too much was going on and there was no intentional thread to bring it all together. If only Tayla’s bedroom was like her bathroom, which was surprisingly calm and chic.
Who got it right: Chantel and Wyatt
You have to hand it to these two, they know their style and they’re sticking to it. It’s elegant, it’s cohesive and it’s tastefully done. The scalloped bedhead and pops of chocolate and walnut take it from vanilla to very appealing to the mass market. Tayla, take note!
Mistake 4: A mirror against curtains… what?
One might think it’s obvious that you don’t lean a mirror against curtains, but perhaps not. The oversized wavy mirror cramped the space, was impractical to use and just generally seemed like a bizarre decision. If it doesn’t fit, leave it out.
Who got it right: Lisa and Rosco
Although not perfect as far as styling, Lisa and Rosco didn’t clutter their guest suite quite so much. They kept the mirror to the bathroom, which was a warm and inviting space.
Mistake 5: Wasted storage space
The teams designed the wardrobes for the guest suites and Shaynna noted the side shelves were a little deep in Tayla and Rick’s space – noting the depth of a book would have been better suited and could have redeemed some extra hanging space.
Who got it right: Courtney and Sev
The girls nailed their joinery, maximising storage by moving a door and building in extra cabinetry with a sink and coffee station. This will help the space function as a self-contained area, increasing the value of the property.
